When this lens was first announced I scoffed. Wasn't a focal length I loved, too expensive, blah blah blah. Then I seen some of pics here...and then ran into some situations when I actually needed a 50ish mm rather than a 35 or 85. So I bit. The big decision is this or the siggy, but after seeing some of the comparisons.....I just like the 58 photos more.
When I first got it....I was not too impressed. Pretty soft close up. My 50 1.4 AI-S is sharper. But I started to look closer and shooting people. The 58 bokeh is incredible. The look is just what I want in a portrait lens. I'm pretty happy with it.

this is simply a wonderful photo. the bokeh and colors all add to the subject. the siggy couldnt do this...everything is just so pleasing to the eye, nothing harsh, no hard abrupt edges.
Seriously about to pull the trigger on the 58/1.4 as a permanemt lens on my Df until I read about Loxia announcement, promising a lighter and smaller lens with excellent bokeh amd manual aperture ring. How many of you are affected by this announcement like me? There is also the Sony FE55/1.8 that offers something similar.
But the thought of mounting the Zeiss on A7R which has shutter shock issues kinda turns me off.

Both the Loxia lenses are slight redesigns of ZM lenses which have been around for a while. And the 50/2 Planar performs almost identically to the ZF.2 50/1.4 Planar at the same apertures (smooth bokeh lens this is not).

If this is true, I won't go wrong with 58/1.4 then. Thanks for letting me know.

Little girl's first day of school. Grade one. Did a quick photoshoot. She was sick of it by the time I brought out the 58mm but managed this one.
Fantastic picture! It really shows the qualities of that lens. And of course the photographer to!
The swedish photomagazine FOTO lists the Nikon 58/1,4 as one of the sharpest normal lenses they ever tested. Along with Zeiss Otus and Sigma 50/1,4 Art. The magazine does a lot of lenstesting with MTF equipment, so if you want to see some really nice MTF graphs of those lenses, check out this link:

Everyone knows that this is not true. The strength of the 58/1.4 is not its sharpness.
This lens is by no means the sharpest but it’s definitely not soft. Sharpness is overrated!! A lot of photographers tend to have a pixel-peeping disease these days...
