Well, it's time to blame this forum again. After watching this thread for the past couple of years and using this lens a couple of times I finally picked up a mint copy that focuses very accurately. I began a couple of years ago to obtain my pre-retirement (non editorial/commercial work) wish list and feel I have finished it. 20G, 28E, 58G, 105E, 70-200E. It took some time but was worth the effort. This is one of the most intriguing lenses I have come across and plan to enjoy the challenge of making the most of it.
This lens keeps calling me but I really like 85mm focal length as well, I find anything beyond 85mm to introduce too much compression to my taste so 105mm and over has been ruled out.
Does anyone shoot both the 58mm and 85mm 1.4 g and if do they render in a similar way being of the same era and, given minimum focusing distances for both lenses, is there enough difference in the field of view to shoot both?
As a side note, 35mm is the widest I am comfortable shooting so I would be looking at 35mm + 58mm + 85mm combo.
I absolutely love your mushroom photos. I am a fellow mushroom hunter as well. Do you eat any you find? At any rate, your photos are all top notch and they give me inspiration to get out and shoot. Are you still using extension tubes for your 58mm?
I have 85 1.8 and 58 and 105. The 85 1.8 is a great lens for it's price and does take nice photos. But since I got the 58, I found my self not using it much at all. The main reason is focal length of the 85 is to close to the 58 and to lessor extend the render isn't as smooth or interest as the 58 although the AF is faster and it is sharper. I got myself the 105 just 2 weeks ago to take the 85 place. I also have the 28 1.8 to cover the need for wider shots. So the 28 58 and 105 will cover 99% of my needs.

Ditto, only my latest is the 58mm. I have 28e, 58g and 105e.
I stopped using the 85 so moved it when I added the 58mm and moved the 28 1.8 when I got the 28 1.4e.
My 28e for my purposes can easily double as a 35 with a bit of cropping, especially on the larger mp cameras.
