Hi, I am looking to purchase my first “premium” prime lens. I currently have the 28mm 1.8g, 85mm 1.8g and an old 60mm 2.8 micro lens. I looked through my pictures and 50mm is defintely my favorite focal length. I recently sold my 50mm 1.4. I have a d610 and shoot mostly portraits.
This thread has conviced me the 58 1.4 may be the lens. There are some amazing photos on here!!! Thank you to all the contributers!!
So I know the the lens will need fine tuned and not to shoot wide open at MFD.
My major concern is getting consistent results. What kind of keeper/toss rate is everyone getting when culling for sharpness?
Can I park it at f2 and get consistent results no matter the focus distance or focus point I choose in the view finder?
At what focus distance does f1.4 become consistently sharp?

The 58G is a speciality lens and worthy of spending time to learn how to gel with it. Once you become accustomed to its strengths and weaknesses it is an amazing lens. For portraits I often use it at MFD @f/1.4 as it yields dreamy portraits yet sharp at the centre with a glow not unlike many Leica lenses. It is important to note that the 58G is great at the centre for portraits but off centre you need stop down to suit. It is obvious and yet I have been caught a number of times. If you are after some more sharpness and flatter field f/1.8 to 2.2 even 2.8 is excellent. For landscapes f/5.6 or 7 is sharp and I often use this for street photography. Have fun

I use my copy mostly at f1.4 with my D610. Initially, I had inconsistency even with AF adjustment so I mailed the body and lense to Nikon. I got very good AF consistency since. However, after getting a Z6, my 58G AF is awesome, especially at low light and F1.4. In my use, I think the lense is sharp enough @f1.4 if the focus is on point.
So I only brought the Df and the 58mm on vacation. Went to take some photos at volcano and changed the aperture and kept getting a "err" message. Lens only works correctly at F/1.4, any other aperture "err" comes on display. Anyone else ever had this happen? Nikon walked me through a few things but nothing worked.

Can you move the switch which changes the aperture?
Maybe stop by a local camera store or Best Buy and ask if you can try one of their display bodies to see if the same issue exists.

Going to check when I get home to see if its the Df or the 58. When I switch to other modes the camera doesnt function properly either. Strange dilemma, cleaned all contacts and did a reset, since we leave in a day Im going to wait. Nikon's last suggestion was sending both in, so that might be what happens in the end.

Really liking this lens! Its not the sharpest lens in my bag, I didn't edit these yet, Only used one of my lr presets.
But it really has character
I feel like these images really show off the character of this lens. Vintagey with gorgeous out of focus rendering, sharp enough but not in a clinical way. Great job
