I may purchase a used 58G off someone local. Is there any way I can check if his copy is sharp wide open without going through the AF fine tuning? As I can't waste the seller time while inspecting the lesn. Would live-view be a better option for these tests? (I hope to get my pre-ordered D850 delivered soon, which can do the auto AF fine-tune).
I currently own the 50mm art, but it's way too big and heavy - and I am ready to let sharpness go for the price of lightweight and character.
This thread is dangerous!!! Back in the Nikon world after picking up a D850 but keen to stick to primes (save maybe for a 24-120 for holidays) as I had a great experience using using just primes on the A7rii.
Picked up a Sigma 35mm and feel that the 58mm would be just the right length of accompaniment at the long end.... dangerous!!!! 20/35/58 would be a nice kit!

That's my exact setup, plus the 135 Art. I'm definitely done buying gear.
Unless @Elijah starts pimping some other magical lens.

I've got the nikon 20, 35A, 58 and 105. It's killer! Except I'm thinking I might dump the 20 and 35A for the 28E....

Eh... To each his own. I dumped my 24G and 35G for 28E and regretted it.
Returned the 28E, re-purchased 24G + 35G again and been happy ever since.
Don't get me wrong, the 28E is amazing. I just didn't like how the compression just wasn't there for a wide angle (compared to 35G) and it was almost too wide for most of my wedding/engagement applications.

Interesting, thanks for your perspective. Was planning on renting it first before dropping the coin on buying one. I do love the 35A and 20 1.8 so it would have to blow those two away for me to drop them.
The reason I'm thinking about the 28 is because I've been using the 20 a lot lately and when I grab my 35A, I find myself wanting wider. My thought was the 28 might be a good mix of the two? Who knows, GAS is high right now especially with the d850 out...

20/28/58 is a great arrangement
you probably wouldn't miss 35.
elijah just has a special love for his 35.
he made great images with all of these lenses.
FL is a completely personal thing. it's almost like asking what color car should I get?
these FL 28/35 are close, but it's up to you to decide which is best.
28 is just a step wider.
the only issue is that the 58 is not going to be anywhere near as sharp on the d850 as the 28, obviously.

This ^
For me, I've found out that I need too wide angle primes that work on people. So the 24+35 works great.
20mm is too wide 28mm is too close to 35mm (IF you have a 35mm) so 24mm works for me. I'm a little anal about this stuff but that's what works for me!
But then again, don't forget that I still own an UWA zoom. (It's a sigma 12-24mm, but don't tell anyone that I have a sigma lens ) If I hadn't, I would never stop at 24mm. I think I would have a 20/35 setup.
