OK guys, now this is really fooling around, but just for the heck of it and because I'm really impressed by the 58Gs performance - this is a 55MP 7-shot panorama of St. Goarshausen (with Burg Katz - "the cat castle") - at f/1.4. I will not do this again, I promise.

Looks pretty dang good... at 1.4 to boot! It shows the versatility of this lens.
Shot of my daughter who requested a guitar lesson from me while we were out at the beach this weekend. That 40 year old guitar was mine when I was her age!
Sooooo, I've been scratching and clawing my way through this thread; most of you may have noticed the like notifications from years ago? Finally picked up this lens. Got rid of all my zooms. Just really been digging the wider angle shots, but I still like that pop of the background. I have the 24mm 1.4, but it's a bit too wide. Had a 50mm 1.8. No magic. Gave it to my mom. Man, this 58mm is perfect for me. I used to be one of those people who were impressed with counting eyelashes at 100% (it's still mind blowing sometimes), but I'm over it. There's that quote paraphrased: if you're looking at sharpness in a photo, the photo sucks. Something like that. haha. I won't bore anyone with test shots. Maybe I'll share a bit when I shoot some people. Thank you all for the motivation to purchase the lens. Elijah, I'm sure your check from Nikon is in the mail!
On my annual visit to the Oregon Country Fair I decided to try the 58mm. The day was unusually overcast for a summer day in Oregon, so the colors are muted. I find that (for me) the 58 isn’t a good fit for the rapidly changing chaos of the fair where one needs to be able to quickly pivot, point, focus, and shoot. for me the focus doesn’t snap into place fast enough. My old AF 85mm f/1.4D isn’t snappy either, but I’m much more confident that the 85mm will lock focus first time exactly where I want it.
I’m going to keep the 58 as my walkabout lens, but I’m planning on reverting to my 85mm f/1.4D for next year’s trip to the Oregon Country Fair. (The final 35 photos – Saturday’s photos – in the gallery were done with the 85mm f/1.4D.)
