I picked up a Flashpoint StreakLight 360 last week and I was eager to shoot into the sun using it in combination with HSS. The results varied from shot to shot as the sun was going in and out of trees and my daughter was moving around a lot but I did nab a few keepers that I am happy with.
Shawn I really enjoy the way you process your pictures sometimes with a sort of darker background then the subject. I definitely had that in mind when shooting these pictures.
I'm an Abu Dhabi based photographer just kicking off my photography career shooting family portraits, engagement and weddings. I've used the 35/85 combo for as long as I can remember but only recently have I started to yearn for something a bit wider than both lenses. My ideal set up being a couple of D750s a 24mm 1.4 and the 58mm 1.4.
I took the first step towards that combo today after researching the 58mm but now I've got it home and I'm messing around with it with household items, wide open it is very very soft / hazy. It's nothing to do with DoF, just generally it's quite soft.
I'll be using this mainly for portraits and I'm sure close up I read it was terribly soft but further away is where the magic starts to happen... Would that be fair to say?
Do you get perfectly sharp pictures with live view focusing? Did you fine-tune the autofocus?
Getting sharp pictures near the minimum focus distance is especially hard with this lens.

Hi All,
This is my first post here so... Hello...!

I've just done a very crude test and it looks like it's front focusing quite a bit. I've just printed a chart off and I'll do something a bit more accurate tomorrow.
I'll probably post up a pic just to make sure I've done it right!

I've only owned my 58/1.4 for a week, and I realized last night as I was reviewing some images that they were all front-focused.
After a +15 AF fine-tune adjustment, everything seems to be okay. I looked at two other of my lenses and no adjustment (zero) was needed for them.
Just got a rental of the 58 f1.4G yesterday and did a day of shooting in Philly today. Comparing it to the 58 f1.4 Voigtlander I talked about a little ways back. Turns out I am a bit of a bokeh whore - who knew?!?! I really like this lens and the AF came in handy too. I'm kind of a street shooter, among other things (usually environmental stuff with a 28mm or wider), and did a few "street portraits" at the Reading Terminal Market - those would have been really challenging without the AF...
I'm gonna shoot with both lenses through Thanksgiving and then decide which to keep. I suspect I'm gonna end up with the Nikon, probably buy the rental I'm shooting for a decent used price... Focus seems really good on the DF - that always seems to be the case... I didn't shoot everything wide open, but these posted shots are all f1.4....
