they sure do
I think the pro reviews are suggesting that nikon made the 58 larger, intentionally (but for no purpose) just so it looks big and expensive.
I'm really not 100% sure though.
certainly the lens could be a lot smaller, based on the image above. looks like a lot of air in there
cheers
You might as well contribute to the thread or just leave the thread . I don't think you're qualified enough to Comment on lens design and engineering. This thread is for sharing images made by the 58 not why there's so much air in there.

wow my first bad taste of medicine here on FM
sensitive much?
I usually stay away from talking about other folk's qualifications and where they belong. I'll just leave it at that.
hopefully we can still be friends, and move on.

From time to time we have people come in here and tell us the lens we're using is bad and we should feel dumb for using it. It gets old.
Oh oh oh. I get that. That's probably frustrating since it's a fairly big investment.
Happy shooting!!
While some people talk about air, other take photos ^^
Is it overpriced? That's a question that could well be asked for almost anything related to photography (for example that a7rII that has a price double that of the a7r for no apparent reason, something no reviewer even commented upon)
in the end the only thing that matters is whether you are happy with the tool you have, and if it makes you want to shoot more with it. Reviews may be somewhat useful, price and size considerations are interesting, but I think we - as photo gear geeks - give it too much weight. What should matter is whether the lens suits your shooting style and aesthetics. Go shoot more. As for me I'll go back to enjoying the pictures posted here and practice my skills with the gear I already have.
overpriced is relative. I had a $500 bottle of wine last night for dinner with the wife, was it worth it? absolutely, it was delicious and the wife liked it. Is a $1700 lens worth it? sure, my wife loves the picture I take with it. who the fck cares what someone on the internet thinks? stop feeding the troll and he'll go away.

dont mind me here, just taking pictures.. (steps over the mess cautiously)
that is a really nice image.
hope people are not hating me. I was getting set to add this to my bag. wanted people to remark on the comments I posted from pro reviews, they were not mine.
everyone got REALLY upset with me personally.
to be frank, I had the 50L 1.2 until last week, when I sold off the last of my canon kit.
I had the same attachment to my 50L as you guys have for your 58G.
one of the reasons this lens appealed to me is it's versatility.
I used to shoot 50mm for portrait, but then preferred 85mm. But then I started shooting more children and wanted to be closer to them.
originally I didn't want to have two expensive portrait lenses in my bag, say a 85G and 58G.
But alas, the 58mm FL seems to be a really nice place.
I went on to read some reviews and was really surprised.
you guys seem seriously content, and the images look solid... so I'll reconsider.
double check my candor.
let's just move on. not a troll. didn't intend on starting trouble.
cheers

Had a Mid-Autumn festival event for the kids at our apartment complex.
Although nothing special, I thought the lens performed pretty well considering it's ISO 3200 on a D700, f1.4 1/80s.
Just used the 58mm for an entire photoshoot. In the past I have mainly used my 70-200mm. After I bought the 58mm I used it sparingly during photoshoots until I became comfortable with it. It has slowly bumped almost every other lens our of my photoshoot lineup. I am editing the photos from the shoot but I absolutely am still blown away by the results of this lens.

Finished editing the shots. These are from the first 1/4 of the shoot!
awesome set. agree about using the 58 solely... i had literally used it for every single session for almost a year and then had to stop using it. i wanted to use other lenses to work on composition so I didnt get stuck in the "58 zone." Now i try to mix it up depending on the scene knowing ahead of time i will bring out the 58 for sure for the more epic shots.
love the colors on that set. seems to be a bit different than your normal processing.

Exactly my experience.
Hence contemplating selling my 70-200/2.8. Thinking only buying a 200/2 chubby would help. At least that's what I tell myself
Beautiful set btw. Colours are brilliant.
I feel the same way. My 70-200mm is a hugely flexible lens that if I sold would likely only regret and then purchase again. Especially handy for weddings!

Good advice Shawn. Easy to get stuck on a lens and then in a rut. Processing is a bit more extreme. I actually tried to get skin tones in the realm of your shots. I'm still struggling with that but I do think my skin tones in this set are better than most of my shoots.
