Here is the first comparison against the 400mm f5.6. Hopefully he can do some more comparisions but so far the Tamron seems to have the edge at 400mm wide open.

That 400f5.6 looks like a poor sample, front-focused or vibration was the cause of a less than sharp image.
My 100-400 is sharper than that and it isn't quite as sharp as the 400 prime.
The Tamron shot looks quite good though, even toward the bottom right corner.
More evidence still needed.
There is something seriously wrong with his 400mm f5.6, because in the sample image nothing is really sharp. The bokeh is really funky, too. He could be using a cheap filter, perhaps?

Alright, I couldn't resist...put in my pre-order at B & H. I decided that even if it can't stand up to my Canon 400 DO with a 1.4TC, I'll still use it enough otherwise to justify having it (assuming the IQ is acceptable, obviously), and I had some cash in my paypal account from lenses previously sold that helped me convince myself it made sense.
We'll see if the shipping estimate of 1/17 sticks.

Hope your order went in after mine did. I ordered a bean bag 5to go with my tripod and gimble also.
