Hi Nic, thanks for tracking us down and welcome to FM.

You don't by any chance have sample shots / 100% crops you could share with us...

Pretty please...

I wonder if the Sony release will prompt Canon into releasing a budget FF DSLR, something costing about the same as the 70D which to my eye is starting to look well overpriced now.

IMHO

The 6D cost $ 1800-1900. If you like a new FF that cost just over half the price. Then it have to be less good than the 6D. So what features or other stuff do you like to loose or be less good compared to the 6D
Remember that at least 95% of the people buying a Canon DSLR would never even consider buying another brand and use converters for their lenses.

I severely question this statement (especially since the number of 95% mixes up the majority of Rebel DSLRs with the smaller amount of more professional DSLRs) - now with the introduction of the A7(R). If Canon doesn't has anything close or better than the A7(R) sensor-wise in the same price range when Sony's models hit the market, a larger number of people who are already vested into 5D, 6D, and 1D FF sensor-based cameras will get one of those A7 cameras as secondary body. But an A7 camera series won't be tempting enough for the regular Rebel DSLR user for sure.

+1, $1700 24.3MP Sony A7 is a real threat for Canon in both crop and ff camp. In combination w/ 36 MP A7r, these will force Canon to re-structure their DSLR classes. Best time for Canon shooter from now on. No credits to Canon defending whiners but to both Nikon/Sony

In 2007, my 5D cost $2992, before tax. At that time, most people thought it was a bargain price.

Canon "BigBang" can't be in "Milky" way anymore. It's no longer working for them. Time to give it back to Canon community. They did it in early 2000 and they can do it again

Read some review and see some 24.3 MP A7 JPG samples from SteveHuff: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2013/10/22/a-closer-look-at-the-sony-a7-and-a7r-official-samples/

Well, I don't want to use US prices for comparison because I don't understand local sales taxes so in the UK:

A7R £1699
A7 £1299
6D £1475
70D £1079

Now I know the problem for Sony is that for Canonites to buy their body they will also need to buy a Canon to Sony lens adaptor. That is a one off payment and assuming you are happy to pay this to double your possible choice of bodies, and assuming you don't need top notch AF (because I assume a Canon lens will AF slower on a Sony body than it would on a Canon one) then you could argue that the Canons look over priced.

In particular the difference between a 70D and an A7 is only £220, yet the latter will presumably get you a brand new, state of the art Sony full frame sensor. Similarly the difference between the 6D and the extremely high res A7r is only £224!!!

Plus the fact that the Sonys have only just come out and presumably will drop significantly in price once the early adopters have come and gone.

Alot depends on your need for AF, and whether the cost of an extra lens adaptor puts you off, but aside from these issues Sony have just lowered the cost of full frame sensors for Canon users. That makes current Canon prices look high IMHO.

The 6D for example is a very fine camera, but a digital Rebel it isn't. There is plenty of scope for Canon to take the 5D2 or 5D3 sensor and put it in a plastic Rebel body and lower the price to the 70D price point. If they don't my next full frame body will probably be a Sony. Speaking personally. £1000 for a crop sensor DSLR, however good, just doesn't look competitive to me anymore.

I like the new A7R, and maybe I will buy one. But for Canon users in this forum you should probably add the price of the adaptor and the battery charger to the Sony prices. (you don't get those in your price)

Hello Lars,

Yes, I did point out the adaptor issue cost in my post. Some will find the cost of the adaptor puts them off, some won't. I would justify the adaptor cost to myself on the basis that I could choose the best new body technology from Canon and Sony, sort of doubles my choice as a consumer.

Of course not everyone will see it that way I know. But enough might to change the economics of body purchasing.

Hi David
Just a quick look at Amazon UK shows that those Canon bodies cost less than you write

Hello Lars,

Sure. I used the prices from Warehouse Express all taken at the same time just for some sort of comparison. I suspect though that my point holds on the basis that the early Canon adopters have been taken long ago and so these older Canon bodies are discounted now. The Sonys presumably are entered on to the market at their highest price which will probably drop?. I suspect the prices of the Sonys will go down in similar proportions to the Canons after Xmas.

Better to compare next February when the dealers get desperate!

We will see in a few months when people have used it. If it's good I will probably buy the A7R and use it with my MF Zeiss ZE glass (Canon mount)

If the adapter works flawlessly on the A7R, It might be a good idea to buy all Zeiss lenses in Canon EF mount. That way, if Canon comes out with a decent body in the future, the lenses will still be useable.
