No, the 5D II was all about the video. The 1Ds III already had 21MP in 2007.

Sensor, DR... in shooting action will the A7 outperform the 5D3, or the 6D for that matter?
Or is this camera simply too pedestrian for say, kids in the backyard, takraw, carnaval?
In saying that I'd wager that the keeper rate would be better than my Nikon FM's gave.
The sensor may be 'DxO better' but what about the package?
Just what are we looking at in terms of responsiveness - 'street' photography, landscapes, portraiture?
Take care,
Paul.
Don't forget the smart converter getting smarter and smarter in time, A good programmable chip with best AF conversion firmware (from the converter) can be used to improve the AF interface between Sony AF firmware to EF or any other MFG lenses. If Sigma and Tamron can do it then why not the same from this converter. It takes time but better AF performance will be there in future. All you need to do is upgrading its proper firmware.

Many of us will keep our 1DMIII or MIV or...for sports and fast focus. But, for slower stuff why not use the A7/r? This is the sensor I have been waiting for and the price point is very appealing.

Well, the A7 is no different. The Sony is just as groundbreaking as the 5D2 when it was released when you consider it's price point. The 5D2 was not a sports camera, and neither is the Sony.
Not to mention, it happens to be about $6000 cheaper than any Canon 1DS4 would cost with a sensor that can't compete.
Canon better start figuring out how to put the A7r sensor in the 5D4, cause they are getting their ass kicked now. Canon will have to stop the crippling and gouging now, thanks Sony!...Show more →
I'll guarantee the 5D II AF will still smoke the A7R AF using Canon glass. It would be nice not to be restricted to geriatric snails for moving subjects, there's more to life than just landscapes, as much as I love that. I'm sure with native FE glass the Sony will be fine for normal use, but for Canon users I can't see too many buying new glass.

If you want fast focus, Canon pretty much has that covered right now. So many of us don't need a fast focus camera, as we already have that. What is missing is a high MP camera to do landscape, or even macro work. I think that is why this thread has stayed up at the top of the page so long. The A7/r is an intriguing option to waiting for Canon to catch up in the sensor area.

I agree, I'm sure it would. But those in the market for this body will not be concerned about sports AF. Slow moving subjects and landscape (DR & high MP) are huge markets and Canon is now up against the ropes. What is Canon going to do for this market now? Release a 1DS4 for 7K with an inferior sensor? Nah, I'll store the lightweight compact 2k Sony in the bag to fill that niche when I need it.
Canon users should be thanking Sony as it's going to result in less crippled and less expensive Canon bodies.

You're probably quite right. OTOH, I'm really looking forward to seeing the results with Canon TS-E 17/4L, TS-E 24/3.5L II, and EF 135/2; Zeiss Contax 28/2.8 and 100/3.5, Zeiss ZE 18/3.5 and 50/2; and, Mamiya 645 C 80/2.8N, A 120/4 Macro, A 150/2.8, and A 200/2.8 APO. It might be a while before all of these are tested and the results published...
Maybe I should get one.
+1
I am almost never an early buyer of anything. I prefer to sit back and wait; however, this camera really has me thinking that I may change my ways.

Competition is good, and intense competition is even better. Canon I think are acutely aware they cannot put this off any longer and have been for a long while. 2014 must be the Chinese year of the sensor! 7D II must start the ball rolling with totally new sensor - even if it were a 1DX lite for $1.5K, no one will care if it's just got a 70D sensor.

...you'll have no DR advantage with the Sony, just like the Nikon. The huge DR is at base ISO, so for landscape, architecture, studio portraits, maybe some macro, but unless you've got very good light and stick at base ISO or so, no DR improvement.
I am wonder where do you get this data...c'mon now, A7(r) just announced last week and no one here has tried them yet.

Looking at DxO curves Sony and Nikon have DR advantage to around ISO 800 of about 0.8EV. So a stop or so further than I remembered. But the big differences are at ISO 50-200 where it's 2.7-1.5EV

It's user error. The only thing the adaptor can do is not mount the lens perfectly straight. If you are shooting shallow dynamic range and manually focussing correctly than the adaptor cannot possible harm the image quality (unless there is a light leak - very unlikely).
The more plausible explanation is that you can't just hand an unseen camera body and brand new ultrafast manual lens to a bunch of journalists and expect them to produce flawless images right away.
I've seen enough samples of the Otus 55 f/1.4 to believe the lens is not at fault here

Seems to me not only do Canon have to deliver updated sensor technology, but the Sonys also establish that the cost of full frame bodies needs to come down.
Full frame bodies have arguably had an excessive price premium too long. There now needs to be a new body significantly cheaper than the 6D, more the cost of a higher end crop body. I would like to see a stripped down FF body for the cost of a 70D. Basic, but good. Or I will buy the A7!
This new class of affordable full frame bodies don't need high fps, weather sealing, alloy body, gps, wifi, level sensors, pop up flashes, go faster stripes etc. They will need a great center AF point and a cracking sensor.
And a lower price tag. Full frame needs to become more affordable, Sony are showing the way.

+1, best of all this twin A7(r) now serve as cross platform bodies which takes any lenses that you can throw at them by competition, this in turn will reduce the lens cost as well.

I can understand your "Canon have to deliver updated sensor technology"
But I can't understand why " the Sonys also establish that the cost of full frame bodies needs to come down"
And if Canon don't release a FF that is significantly cheaper than the 6D. Then you will buy a Sony that is not significantly cheaper than the 6D
