Send it to Leica of New Jersey and have them test it.
A brand new lens? I assume I have to pay for that? I'm asking partly because I had read (I think on Ming Thein's site) that he had experienced a pretty big range of variation.l

If there is any question about charge for checking alignment, etc. by Leica Camera USA in Allendale, NJ, just call them at 800-222-0118 and ask for or follow the prompts for service.
I have walked into the US/North America Headquarters in Allendale and they have checked some of my R lenses right then and there if there was an issue with a lens. They have only charged me for a repair or a clean and lube otherwise it was free.

Just paid for my A7R and it's coming in to the shop on Monday. Got a huge discount too as I know the staff very very well and they look after me. The margins on this camera are extremely large which is unusual so I'm guessing the price will drop considerably over the next few months. I wasn't expecting that as I consider the launch price to be very good for what you're getting.
Shame I won't be able to use the damn thing until the 55mm f1.8 arrives. Tempted to pick up an X-E2 and 35mm f1.4 just to play with for now. I really miss my X-E1.

Brilliant idea, thanks -- I'm in NYC, so it's actually a reasonable outing! Thanks for the suggestion.

I had the newest Elmarit and also a new 90 Cron (non-APO), and preferred the latter, but when I got my hands on the 80 Lux-R, I sold both. The Lux has much more beautiful boke and rendering, and is amazingly sharp from f/4.
Carsten, telyt, waterden, Artur, and zhangyue - thanks for the feedback.
I'll keep my eyes open for local copies; am also on the hunt for a C/Y 85/2.8 which is nice and compact to broaden the choice.
I'd like to settle on a lens which treats the OOF nicely; doesn't have to be brilliantly sharp wide open (a plus actually) but is decently sharp across the frame when stopped down a few for use in city and landscapes. A true multi-purpose, travel lens.
I'd also consider both M lenses as well as R but want to keep the costs reasonable; might consider a G too but haven't experienced G adapters and somehow the simplicity of the other mounts I find attractive but maybe I shouldn't so hesitant for that reason.
Rich, speaking of R lenses, when do you expect to receive your camera and be operational? It'll be great to get your feedback on how they behave on the A7(r).

I always said I would never buy a Sony camera.
I think I'll be eating crow.
I am already slowly roasting my portion of crow in the oven.
Honestly, it makes two of us, I would have never even looked at Sony until they released this thing. Now one is sitting right here.

I'd suggest you should be hesitant about choosing the G Sonnar 90/2.8 but only because you're also thinking about Leica R and Contax C/Y lenses. Focusing a G lens with even a decent adapter (I have the Metabones) is miserable compared to focusing an Elmarit-R 90/2.8 or a Sonnar C/Y 85/2.8.

genji thanks for the feedback - I've shied away from G lenses so far because I do prefer simplicity and am happy to stick to that. I think I'll look for a nice minty C/Y 85/2.8 for price/performance/weight or Leica R 80 or Leica R 90/2.8 (know someone with a good copy for reasonable price) and be done with it while waiting to see what comes out as native glass.

Apologies if this has been posted before but here's Brian Smith weighing in on a subject that has been talked about but with a full suite of images showing the Sony E mount 10-18mm APS-C lens as used on the A7r.

The unexpected size of the reception given to the a7r in particular will strengthen the case to speed up the release of high end (and high profit) FE lenses, for which there will now be huge demand, especially for wide angle lenses.
The RF wide angles are fading as viable options, and with the better DSLR wide angles are larger than ideal on a 465 gram camera body, so several good wide angle lenses from Zeiss are needed.
The camera needs a low compromise Zeiss 21-24mm manual prime lens weighing 350-400 grams, and maybe f3.4 - more than it needs an f4 wide angle zoom, which is what the road map has in it for first half 2014. I am guessing that that one could be an AF/OSS 16-35mm lens at f4.

Yes, actually the best thing to hope for (if you want compact, good quality, good image quality fast glass) is good initial sales for both the A7 and the A7R cameras.
They have the most important lens for me, the 55mm FE, they have a reasonable 35mm lens - now they need a good quality normal zoom (it doesn't seem the Sony "kit" zoom really cuts it...), a wide angle, and an F2-0-2.8 85-100mm portrait short tele.
