Cool! I'm delighted the FE55 may show up way sooner than was expected. I have plans for that one.

Are you dealing with Sony store, on-line, or a dealer? PM me if you aren't keen to share in the open.

So my question is, why the hell is the USA the *last* people to get shipments? Are we the largest market, and Sony is hoping to drum up additional interest by letting us see happy owners from other countries, hoping to lure additional buyers?

It's dark outside and these shots are really only for my own decision making process, so please try to keep the criticism to a minimum. It is what it is. I'm coming to my own conclusions having seen the comparison.

I've uploaded them as jpegs and a few other A7r pics to my Flikr account. I don't use

Hilarious!

It has always been the case that a leaf shutter based camera can be shot hand-held at a slower shutter speed versus a camera with a focal plane shutter. I'm still surprised by your high % of soft images. Others have mentioned the shutter button being "mushy" with no real tactile feedback and I wonder if that also comes into play.

35/1.4. I suppose I just have steady hands. Probably why I am looking into surgical residencies. 1/focal length has always worked highly well for me. All bets are obviously off when talking about moving subjects though. I tend to get a little more than 1/FL depending on the lens. The 35L is far more forgiving than the 85L. 50MP did reasonably well at 1/35-ish range. Keep in mind that I am definitely in what seems to be the minority here on FM - I hate strobe lighting and can't stand hauling a tripod around so I have had quite a bit of practice at maximizing my potential with available light.

Just need a shutter-activated scalpel then, Cool Hand Luke!

It's technique that involves much more than steady hands is my opinion. Hands get connected to the arm bone, arm bone connected to the shoulder bone etc.

I have been getting tack sharp shots with my D800E handheld at shutter speeds 1/60 1/100 1/250 etc with short lenses like 35/1.4 and 50/1.8. I have gotten sharp results at below these speeds as well. Why should A7r be any different and it doesnt have mirror also.
I remember people talking about proper handholding techniques when the 12 megapixel bodies were launched...and a lot of discussion happened when 16 mp bodies came. 16 mp nodies were touted as super high res bodies.

Wait a few years and 36 mp will look oh so old...

I have D800E too, but it's ginormous and heavy compared to the featherweight A7 cameras which feels not easy to handhold steadily.

I agree. I have been getting very sharp shots with my NEX 7 at speeds lower than 1/FL. That said, my very brief brush with the A7R at a show was not successful. There will be some learning involved IMHO, but I don't see why it wouldn't work out.

New products are often released first in smaller markets to keep glitches contained. And the USA might not be the largest market, China is.

Steve has received an A7 + Kit lens, A7R and the 35mm + 55mm on 15th November but has nothing written about it yet.

Hopefully my preorder will arrive next thursday :-)

I just tested the camera with the 21mm Distagon, the 17mm TSE and the 135mm APO-Sonnar. The camera focused perfectly at infinity with all three lenses. The Metabones III seems quite well built and it works very well. The few quick test shots I took, processed in Iridient and examined in CS6 look very good. Later this afternoon I am going to go out and take some more more real shots. The ones I just took were out my back window. Nothing exciting, but I wanted to test the camera. Also I found it is definitely best to trigger the camera...Show more

I'd love to see what the Zeiss 135 APO looks like on the A7r body. I'm frightened it will completely dominate it.

Not sure about Sony or when it comes to hot product releases, but I know another company switched to shipping most of their product by ship rather than air freight for the cost savings. The consequence naturally, is it takes a lot longer for the product to arrive.

IIRC, this distribution pattern has also occurred with other manufacturers. Maybe the US is no longer the great market it once was?

I went out and shot today with the 17mm TSE and 35mm 1.4 Distagon ZE. Both worked very very well, I will put up a couple of shots later. Tomorrow after work I will take the 135 Sonnar out and take a few shots.

Sounds Great!. Get a shot of the body with the lens mounted too if you get a chance (with a cell phone). I'm really hoping the ergonomics of the A7/r will be OK for the larger lenses.

It works pretty well, IF the you have the grip. Without the grip it is really unbalanced and hard to hold, at least for me. Though the 135mm handles much better attached to the 5d3, the A7 is a little small for it, imho.

I've been shooting with the D800e for a little over a year now and find there are a few ways to ensure sharp scalpel like images in lower light. Like discussed above keeping your shutter setting as fast as possible, a small easily carried monopod does wonders as well as the under used auto ISO setting. Most of the time shooting with a monopod is all I need to do in low light. I imagine the A7r will be just like the D800 and require that the photographer using it actually know how to steady the camera properly.

I have a first generation Metabones EF to E mount adaptor I got when they first came out. It worked with all my Canon lenses with the Nex7. Any ideas if it would work the the A7r? I only need aperture control and not AF.

No I'm pretty sure you need the version III. I think the first iteration is really built for the APS-C sensor in NEX cameras.
