DPReview just added a shooting experience and studio shots (A7r only) to their hands on preview. Too bad they didn't try any non native mount lenses. http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-7-7r/5

Doorhof claiming A7r as having slower AF than the Fuji X-E1. AF speed claims seem to be all over the map. I find the Fuji to be plenty fast now, but to be slower is a concern, while dpreview claim A7r AF is quite good, geez!!

Dont want to believe Cameralab...but dslr live view speed is scary. I dont care about continuous focus...but the single point AF should atleast be at par with RX100...
I have never seen a pre-production camera hugely different from the final firmware. Its just that, a disclaimer.
I hope Cameralab guy hates Sony. Makten wrote:
More important: Did they use a preproduction camera? Then we can't draw any conclusions at all.

I don't think Dpreview say that the A7r AF is faster than the A7 in general. They say it is faster in low light, and more accurate or reliable in general.

I was really curious about the A7r and moire. It is evident in the DpReveiw Raw studio setup as seen below. It's minimized a lot in the jpeg, though it's still there if you compare the places it shows up in the raw. Sony seems to be doing a lot of special processing with their jpegs (moire reduction and sharpening at the very least).

If you read the cameralabs rev comments in SAR, he uses e-m5, so that is where he is coming from. Another web site review was putting it a little faster/slower then nex-6 & Fuji ex1 w/ firmware updated and depending the lenses. All are faster then RX1. Start-up time was a little longer then RX1 which is approx. 3 sec...

dpreview just updated their preview with an ongoing impression of both cameras after a few weeks with the cameras. Most interesting comment made was how the A7r focuses noticeably better in low light.
1) It's DPR, and while they're pretty good tech writers, their photographic savvy is lacking.
2) This directly contradicts real, actual youtube focus tests (preproduction) between the A7 and A7r.
So either there's a conspiracy and people are putting up fake or time-compressed focus videos on Youtube, or people are testing different versions of firmware(because CameraLabs also compared focus speed to a freaking DSLR LV...really? ), or there are severe performance swings between decent light and very low light.

That was interesting, but the most curious thing (and potentially disappointing) item about the A7 vs A7r was report of the more heavily processed high ISO jpegs of the A7......
(not sure if its OK to quote this here).....
"I haven't had time to pit the two cameras against each other to see if there's a real problem with the kit lens, but there's no question the α7's images are different from the α7R in other ways as well. The α7's JPEG images are more heavily processed with Sony's overaggressive anti-noise strategies. What should be soft bokeh is too often re-rendered as something that looks more like paintbrush strokes than a simple out-of-focus area. We'll be looking in more depth at this in the coming weeks."

I've seen that painterly style of jpg rendering on some images including those I shot myself but that was on a pre-production camera. The DPR images appear to come from production cameras - EXIF is complete and references V1.00 software.
Where are the examples, and did they come from these cameras, I wonder...

Tried it in the flesh today in Japan. Not sure why they said the focus was slow, it seemed pretty quick to me. Faster than the RX1 I thought.
yes, but around here one sentence on a review site is "doomsday"

That sounds like doomsday. Can't be that bad.
i'm pretty sure he was talking about using sony alpha lenses with the CDAF adapter instead of the one with mirror when he said that.

I'm usually willing to do all kinds of ninja stuff to get cameras asap, so I looked hard at this 42nd street photo deal.
Their ratings on Reselleratings.com made me suspicious. First, they're too high -- five stars -- 9.7/10. Those kinds of stellar ratings are usually only earned by stores world-famous for their service and quality. Also there are way too many reviews thanking 42nd street photo for calling them on the phone to up-sell them a memory card or battery. How many people would really be grateful for this? Read for yourself at http://www.resellerratings.com/store/42nd_Street_Photo
Their ratings on yelp.com seem more real. Basically, lots of people report long delays after placing their order, playing phone tag with someone at 42nd street photo. Until the up-sell call occurs, the order doesn't ship. Read for yourself at http://www.yelp.com/biz/42nd-street-photo-new-york-4
Basically, this makes my spidey-sense tingle and I think I'll pass. That said, if you lot start posting pictures from your 42nd street A7R's on Monday, I'll be pissed!

Ok, I see what they are doing - I just caught the headline price and moved on earlier - they jacked the price up artificially on the sales page and then discount it by $99 to give the impression of a deal even though it's only been brought back to with a buck ninety-nine of MSRP:
Item # 109035
Regular Price $2,397.00
Our Price $2,298.00
You Save: $99.00
Condition Brand New
Availability In Stock Ships Within 24-48 Hrs.
Slimy marketing always causes me to wonder what else is wrong with the offer or the company or both and invariably I walk on.
In this case, if they really do have product, I'd wonder if it was bought in Korea or elsewhere and may not have the same domestic warranty coverage capability. And if they don't have product but are mining for pre-orders or dollars, that's just more slime.
