This just confirm the lens is more like a statement than real world consideration that they desperately need a updated P50 at reasonable price for its poor WO performance.
An updated P50 would be nice, but will it have the same character? I'm glad that they still produce the P50, also keeping the price of the Contax version very reasonable. A new 55/1.2 would have been interesting (although I'm not particularly charmed by what I've seen from the "100 Jahre" Contax lens.

I mean keep the mid distance rendering TBH, I feel we are extreme gentle to this P50 here, if it is Canikon, it will be classified the border line of "Dog" given its WO performance. Don't get me wrong, I like this lens a lot as well.

That's just it. I know my 50 would not be up to the task for a corner-to-corner performance at WO, so I'm forced to stop down to 5.6 or 8. This certainly limits the type of shooting I can do. Now with this WO performance, I can do shot that no one is able to do it before. It's just like that candle lit shot using the 0.7 Zeiss (or is it 0.75). I don't think there is no practical application for a sharp WO shot at this focal length. I think the problem is more about the price tag to get you there. Sure if you can wait a few years down the line, I don't doubt that others will come up with a decent WO performance 50/1.4. But the here and now, this lens is it....Show more →
I don't feel the lens is over priced, consider its performance. With money and 'will' to have it, by all means, get it. It is the BEST if as LC claimed
If I can choose, I'd love to see a lens has center WO performance like this priced at $2000, with P50 size, this will be my day.
I guess LC is the one need this lens more than anyone else, Zeiss hasn't update their lens much...no new lens, no new subscriber

Of course. It takes some skill (someone like Samuli) to get good results with the lens wide open, but I'm sure a lot of people consider it a "dog", considering how many of them I see on the second hand market. I have the Contax version myself.
Im struggling to understand the lack of enthusiasm.
I really think this lens represents an incredible bargain given it's performance. I dunno tho I'm willing to cart around a tripod and shoot with view cameras sometimes so this doesn't seem so inconvenient to me (other than price tag which is less about price/performance and more about absolute price lol).
from the sample pics OoF rendering looks good enough for me. It ticks all the rest of the boxes for me; ~50mm, amazingly sharp, great color correction, no junky/tacky/toy features like AF.
To drift the thread for a moment, anyone have information or care to speculate what FL the next Otuses (or Oti?) will be?...(Tariq, you beat me to the punch as I was writing...)
Those two are the rumored focal lengths. In fact the 85 has been confirmed in the BH interview. I wouldn't dare to think of the possible price for the WA, possibly 5k. I was under the impression that the size would be standardized just like the cine line, but I could be wrong.

The size could be the same for the wide given this standard lens is a Distagon design.

If you will own a 2014 56MP D5 or 65MP 1DMk.V and make a living off of it, a 50/1.4 G, 50/1.2 L or 50 MP likely won't do.
When you are able to make a living with these lenses now, you can also do it with a camera with higher MP. However you will probably not be able to exploit all the qualities of such a camera.

It doesn't take any skill. Just don't shoot it wide open too close. It's not what it's meant for.

Everyone has to determine that for themselves. This lens is sharper in the extreme corner at f/1.4 than the C/Y 50/1.7 is in the center at f/1.7.
I am trying (hard) to see an opportunity where I would need a 1.4 lens that is sharp at the corners..at 1.4..

i can think of many times were i wanted to shoot landscape at infinity at f1.4. usually because i didn't have a tripod, but sometimes because i had a tripod, but wanted to get stars without movement. most of these situations i would not have been willing to carry a lens this big and heavy though.
