Can't get over the new design direction however. Like the Touits it looks like a cheap & nasty AF-lens from the early 90s. Maybe they look better in person?

Seriously, it looks great, as expected. Is there anyone with access who can tell us cheapskates what diglloyd found out about axial CA. How APO is it?
In short, he said it's as good as (or better than) all of the APO he has shot with (minute trace of bokeh CA). I don't have the Leica subscription, but he keeps bringing up the veiling flare issue of the Cron 50 APO. This one is much better in that department. Based on the MTF (one can draw the same conclusion when Zeiss publish the MTF), it does have a bit astigmatism in mid frame and a slight field curvature at the edges. From the MTF chart, I have not seen one better (including the 180/2.8 APO and 280/4 APO).
Why don't all the people who think that Zeiss should have ignored aesthetics and gone for a "serious business" kind of look just get a "serious business" kind of attitude and ignore the aesthetics of the lens?

The new styling reminds me of the old Tamron lenses.

It looks like it performs pretty close to what was promised and that is excellently. I am pretty sure that I will want one and even more sure that I won't be able to afford one for a good long while.

...and my wife accuses me of being passive-aggressive!
Frankly, it's obviously not the end of the world that Zeiss gave this lens a rather odd/ funny sounding name (in English at least). Image does come into play though - with customers and clients - and this "Otus" and "Touit" branding/ marketing seems to be a bit "off" to some of us. Maybe we just need to get used to it...or use a little gaffer tape!
- 2.2 pounds is far from convenient or amazing
- its huge
- design makes me barf a little (BIG UGLY YELLOW LETTERS, YEAH)
- strange name is understatement (funny enough, it means "Creature" in Finnish)
- they dropped Carl, I miss him
- price is far from amazing
- rubber? why is there that f*ckin rubber?
Now, how Leica managed to put same performance in rather small M 50/2 AA?
Its pretty obvious that the folks at Zeiss never watched the old Andy Griffith show - if they had they probably would have cringed at having their lens compared to the town drunk!

Maybe they know more about American history than some Americans. Perhaps they had in mind Elisha Otis.

I am still on the fence about this lens. I love the 50 Planar, in spite of its flaws, because of its lovely rendering, yet in spite of its strengths, the 50 Makro-Planar pretty much leaves me cold, except as a macro and portrait lens. This lens appears to have boke more reminiscent of the 50MP, which would kill it for me.
In my experience, the 50 MP has few rivals at infinity focus. A more versatile lens would be hard to find.

Wait! Does that ugly, yellow font GLOW in the dark? Now, that would be useful.
Haha, I'm not sure even that would excuse the choice of color.
As something of a typophile the font choice on the new lenses is pretty much the only thing that does seem appropriate about the styling though. FF DIN Rounded is a redrawn (and rounded) version of the standardized font from the Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization). Seems like a fitting choice given the company ethos.

The 50MP is a great lens but its performance at infinity in the extreme corners is not its strong suit. It must be stopped down beyond f/8 for those to clean up.
