p.1 #1 · Which UV filters are better, Hoya or B+W

Shopping for filter to protect my new glass, the Nikon 70-200 F4 VR...

I saw these 2 on Amazon, the B+W 67mm XS-Pro Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Nano Coating (010M),

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OVE18I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3SPLR0MSOYZ8O

and the Hoya 67mm HD Hardened Glass 8-layer Multi-Coated Digital UV (Ultra Violet) Filter

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G7PMMW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3H8TVLP6KGHD6

Price wise about same, and I know both brands are good, however, the B+W probably in my personal experiences, are better filter, however, in this case the Hoya HD line seems pretty good or better.

Thanks.

According to Lenstip.com, the Hoya's are better.

The HMC UV-0's are no longer available, however. I've been buying the Pro1 Digital MC UV-0's and am very pleased with the quality.

Now comes the onslaught of naysayers regarding the use of protective filters.

UV's are redundant shooting digital...get a good quality (Marumi) Clear Protector if you must.

Thanks for the reply. Some lenses do require the filter to be totally sealed...so there is option there. I just feel better to have the filter on as long as I've used my cameras. With the good filters, there should not be noticeable differences, however, with a cheap filter, I do notice some degradation.

I'll take a look at Marumi clear protector, however, I used the Marumi polarizer before and I wasn't impressed with it, had to return one because the coating was coming off..

I've been very happy with the Hoya HD UV filters. Never tried B&W, but since I don't see much of a difference with the HD vs no filter at all - its good enough for me.

Then again I'm not looking for a modifier - just simply an added level of protection of the glass beyond just the lens hoods.

True, I'm not looking for any additive either, just a protection, no harm no foul.

I haven't bought a Hoya for 3 or 4 years but I found B+W coatings easier to clean. My old Hoya Pro 1 filters were a PITA once a little oil, mist or salt spray got on them.

I have the B+W XS-PRO Kaesemann Circular Polarizer with Multi-Resistant Nano Coating, which is one of the most expensive Polarizer, but also PINTA to clean too...but I do know that I trust B+W filters, regardless. However, it is time for me to try something new, and it is also cheaper...so I will probably go ahead and get the Hoya HD 8 stuffs and see.

I've used a variety of lenses; FSU, Pentax, Nikon and now Leica. I've also used a small number of filters and the best I've come across are the B+W FPro MRC filters, and I use their UV filters for protection on all my Leica lenses and on my Rolleiflex. No image degradation whatsoever and they're really well made; high quality Schott glass and heavy duty brass rings, and they're easy to maintain. I think maybe the only competitor is Heliopan but they are ridiculously expensive here in the US.

Hi All,

Oh joy, another thread about "how UV filters are gonna save my bacon"!

To the OP, check out this test of low-quality filters vs. high-quality UV filters...

LensRentals.com - Good Times with Bad Filters:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/06/good-times-with-bad-filters

...apparently, "ya gets what ya pays for".

Hmm, 50 UV filters = 50x the protection for my front element?
