p.1 #1 · "The Encounter"

Had an awesome encounter a few months ago while out at a local wildlife refuge with my friend Glen.
We got out there early Sunday morning only to find that we were socked in with fog. Just as we were about to throw in the towel, I saw a Peregrine falcon on the ground with a coot. We slowly maneuvered the car into position and wound up pretty close to her. As soon as we started shooting the fog lifted. We couldn't believe our good fortune. As we were shooting the falcon feeding she suddenly looked up and we couldn't believe our eyes as this beautiful, huge immature female bald Eagle came in to challenge the falcon for the coot. I Managed to get quite a few nice shots of her coming in.
This one I cropped a little tighter for impact. Hope you like it.

Thanks as always for looking and for your input. Appreciated.

Thanks Tim, Ron and Ted. Appreciated.
Ted, this is a bald eagle and they dont get their white head until they are about 5 years old. I stated that it was a juvie but didint mean that its a first year baby although it looks like a yearling. Could be a second year bird.
As with most raptors there is sexual dimorphism and with eagles it can be pretty large.
When seen in real life, her large head and overall size is a giveaway that its a female.
Hope this helps.

David, I have been photographing BE since 2007 (4000+images). You stated the BE was an immature BE. It is clearly a juvi. First year to 1 1/2 years old. At this age, it is doubtful one can determine the sex of the BE from a photograph unless you have two of the same side by side or it was banded.

The female is on the right.

Again, this is a great capture and I hope to see more.

Ted

That is a marvelous capture. That should have gotten the peregrine's attention.
