The local club (it's located about 1 mile from my house) holds a speed event each summer for what are known as EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) jets. These things can be very fast & are relatively small & a real challenge to keep in the viewfinder. It's the only event of it's kind in Canada and it's on again in a week & a half. Many of the planes are foam (advanced forms of styrofoam) or composite to keep them as light as possible. Wingspans range from under 24 inches to maybe 60 inches (very few are that big). These

I can imagine how tough it is to acquire these small fliers in the VF, and keep focus right. Great captures, Larry!

Here's an example of the utility of 10 fps. The bird just caught a fish and it returned to its rock perch to dine. It bashed the prey unto the rock to kill it, then flipped it for swallowing head first. This went on for a couple of minutes and I fired 10-fps bursts intermittently, for a total of 92 frames. Only one frame (posted below) has the prey in a photogenic mid-air/mid-beak position.

Yes I used the burst capability for that & better yet I knew it was coming. I got the shot the previous year (it was very overcast) without knowing he could drop them or would. The burst rate also caught this full sequence until they were out of frame after 7 shots.

And the final frame before they were out of frame

Jim, it's a pile of broken pieces bomber. He was so impressed by the series at that event he wanted to do it again at another fun fly. He made a lower pass, dropped the bombs & watched them fall & hit the ground. By the time he decided to look back at the plane it was only a few feet above the ground going straight in. The good news was that I got the shots (both sets were with the 28-300 L you sold me) & at that event the sun is behind me.

Thank you to all of the posters, beautiful photos here. A special mention to
Liquidstone (jet transiting the moon and the different kind of action), SeattleBirdMan (eagles in action) and Pixel Perfect (the feather loss and the bird swallowing the eel).
But I've to confess I was particularly stunned by the two photos of a female Rufous Hummingbird from Imagemaster. Technically and aesthetically, "chapeau bas l'artiste".
