Thanks for the ideas. Procrastination is painful and penalizing (more like indecision in this case).

For some reason I stopped getting updates notifications about this thread...

I got a message from B&H saying "One or more items from this purchase are still out of stock" It's discouragingly reminiscent of when my 24-70 f/2.8 II was on back order for 5 months last year It's worse with the 200-400 because that's a sizable chunk of change sitting around doing nothing. I could use it for something else if I knew the 200-400 wasn't going to be available until to late to utilize it this year. I have a big 4 day gig to shoot this

I think I mentioned earlier in this thread, but unless you can be pretty much guaranteed being at the front of the line with the big online retailers, you will probably have better luck with smaller pro shops since often it seems Canon spreads around stock to as many dealers as possible.

PetKal wrote:
There have been suggestions that this week the dealers in USA/Canada might get more lenses. The first shipment to select Canadian dealers must have been quite small, because some of bigger stores apparently haven't seen any lenses yet.
One way or another, give it a couple of months, and the lens will be in stock everywhere, because I expect the long term steady-state demand for 200-400L will be very very modest.

So far we've only seen a couple in Canada (Kevin, Canon Rumors, and me) and a few in the US. The impression is Roger received more than one... maybe PM him for suggestions on a better source than B&H?

Would be great to see more work from others posted here.

I agree with Ron, call around to some of the smaller shops. It seems like the medium size stores are your best bet. The ones that sell a few super-telephoto lenses a month.

I got mine from David at Profeel (aka PMI Digital). I e-mailed after I saw they started shipping and he got two of them in his first shipment. One was spoken for and I was able to snag the other I wasn't on any pre-order list.

I'm learning to really love this lens! No question about the sharpness of this lens...

Here are some Grizzly Bear portraits.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's getting a bit late for me to spend much time searching. I'll be shooting four day weekends every other weekend for the next umpteen weeks. One of the things that worries me is that B&H will ship such that the lens will arrive while I'm out of town.

I apologize for whining. I guess I was hoping to hear that quantities of the lens were showing up for shipping to customers. After the wait for the 24-70, I should know better.

Great Grizzly shots. But I don't think 560 mm would be far enough away for me

The next bunch of shots probably don't really show off anything that can't be done with other long lenses. But what made this quite fun was I could stand at the outlook point with just the 200-400 and a couple TCs and that was it, pulling in various compositions without the need for multiple lenses or a lot of cropping in post.

For these, the atmospheric distortion was already great enough that whatever quality drop the external TCs contributed in addition to the internal TC, including stacking the 1.4x and 2x with the internal TC engaged, was fairly minimal. With all three TCs though, barrel distortion was quite strong (+10 correction), as was CA, though it cleaned up very nicely in LR4.

Here's the overall scene at 90mm:

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0246.jpg

And with the zoom:

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0102.jpg
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0224.jpg
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0158.jpg

With stacked external and internal engaged for 1568mm (the stacked external 1.4x is not recognized and therefore not factored into the camera's EXIF calculation):

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0180.jpg
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0216.jpg
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0175.jpg

One with the internal and external 2x, zoomed back a bit. Of course, an hour later, when I was elsewhere, a cargo ship sailed under the lift bridge.

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_0128.jpg

And what I like here is is the ability to shoot loose at 200 and quickly pull out a detail, in this case just by adding an external 1.4x TC to the internal one.

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_1012.jpg
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmcanon/200-400/20130603/20130603_1005.jpg

Of course the question is why not just use an external 2x? At least for me, my habit is to rarely use the 2x, at least for sports applications. 1.4x has always been more versatile and always in the bag. This way I can shoot at up to 560mm and f/5.6 if I want to, then add another 1.4x to hit the limitation at f/8 of a single AF point. If I just went straight to a 2x, then I'd immediately be at f/8 with that AF limitation and sacrificing an extra stop when I might not actually need that much reach.

Here are a few samples shot with the 200-400L around the house and at Shenandoah Nat'l Park a couple days ago. Note that the sole intention of taking these photos was not artistic, but to examine lens performance at various FLs and with different TC combos deployed. Understanding that web-sized images don't tell the whole story, I'm again making the RAW files available for download. You're free to do as you please with them, including tweaking and reposting if it helps illustrate a point.

Many people have expressed their opinions on the price, performance and justification for owning this lens. Each of those arguments has its own merit. I won't speak to the price and justification, because they are subjective for each individual and what is acceptable to me may not be for another. As for performance, I am just delighted. As many have said already, the versatility of this lens is extraordinary. I'm impressed with the IQ even when stacking TCs. Now, if shooting at 800-1200mm is what you need to do with regularity, then I wouldn't say this is the best option. However, if you occasionally need or would like to be able to get that reach (and don't mind MF or can use Live View CDAF), then this lens presents you with that capability.

Enough talk- here are images

Come to think of it, the zoom wouldn't make a bad BIF lens if it wasn't so darn heavy for an 400mm f/4 (or 560mm f/5.6) lens.

Petkal pulls them after an x amount of views has hit the thread. Such a shame since his photos are some of the best on the web.

Thanks. But still makes no sense. OK to steal it on Monday but not on Tuesday. If anyone know Fred perhaps they could ask him if he could right-click protect the images only. Another option would be to post images to your own right-click protected site and then provide a link.

right click protect really doesn't do anything for protecting images.

for instance, if you are on a mac, just hit cmd + shift + 4 and you can copy anything on the screen w/o the right click.

right click protect is actually annoying on an informative site like birdsasart with hyperlinking to all kinds of other info, because then you cannot open the link in a new tab/window, you have to leave the current window you are looking at. Thankfully on a mac, you can hold down the cmd key and it will open in a new tab for you.
