Hi forum,
I became interested in the 1Dx for several reasons, but I suddenly remembered that the silent mode wasn't as silent as the 5DmkIII. Stanj was the one who told me and I also dug up this topic:
I've not noticed any change with the fw updates. I have always assumed that it's a mechanical property that couldn't be affected by fw, but I have no technical expertise, and can at least imagine the possibility that fw could control the speed or delay of mirror movement.
Just curious: Is it substantially quieter than normal operation on a 5DmkII or a 1DmkIV? Or put differently: could I shoot lots of frames in a quiet room where 50 people are listening to a poet or a graduate student giving a presentation? What about a quiet church during a wedding ceremony?
Thanks! Great sequence of sequences.
However, this is 14fps on the 1Dx, so it's not the quiet setting. On the 5DIII I can't tell if it's the quiet setting or not. Could you clarify?

I've read a number of accounts from 1dx and 5diii owners who all seem to agree the silent shutter is quite a bit louder on the 1dx compared to the 5diii.

I've only tested this briefly while in a local camera shop, but the 6D was just slightly 'louder' then the 5D3 when in silent mode. It wasn't a huge amount louder, but you could hear the difference even with other customers/sales folks talking in the background; not 15 feet from me. The 5D3's kinda silent sound seems quite nice.
Put interchangeable focusing screens, -3ev center point, build in GPS and WiFi, an articulated LCD, lighten it up a little and the 5D3 would be near 'perfect'...okay it would just be 'Speshul'...it could be called the 5D4 perhaps

I uploaded a short clip of the 1D X here: http://cl.ly/071W3i1T2o0M . I recorded this with the iPad right next to the camera.
SingleSilent mode is first, then normal mode (High Speed Continuous). It's basically just doing the whole motion slower. I use it sometimes during weddings. I think it helps a little bit. I'd say the sound in Silent mode is softer, and not as high pitched. But silent... ehee..

I would like to thank you all for your input. I have decided on a 5DmkIII, I will get it next year, just before the start of the wedding season, when hopefully the prices are a bit better. Choosing a 5DIII over a 1Dx will also leave me some cash. A 1Dx would have been a bit of a stretch financially, so now I can also get a 50L and either a 85L or a 135L.
