Interesting they would release a firmware update for an older camera. Thought all the bugs were fixed and the camera was fine. Guess Nikon engineers wanted to tweak some stuff.

well, i guess I was wrong:

"An issue that, in some very rare cases, caused images to be extremely under-exposed has been resolved."

I thought the main reason for this new firmware is added compatibility with the new 800mm lens.

Well, for most bodies it is. Actually, they've rolled out firmware upgrades for virtually every DSLR they've produced - even the D50. I guess they want to make sure everyone has a chance to buy that $17K gun of theirs.

Have to admit, that would look pretty funny; one of Nikon's cheapest DSLR's attached to one of most expensive lenses Nikon makes.

Just DO IT kids There's a lot more goin' on here than just the add'n of the 800mm lens compatibility.
Why you ask What should have taken perhaps the blink of an eye, took a good 2 minutes...just sayin'
Update and try some tricky AF in crappy light...go ahead. You can thank me later.
Appreciate it, Chris (and Bruce for the link)

It seemed like the most recent firmware update for the D3s, D4, D7k, D800, D600, et al actually seemed like they did quite a bit of good.

So who knows, maybe this is those updates coded for D300 and D700 bodies.

I challenged my D700 (after the upgrade) to get this shot this morning with the TC-14E II handheld onna 300 f4.
As far as I'm concerned it afforded itself extremely well...D800 territory in fact, as this was a 100% crop SOOC

You know what's coming next Will? Folks will be looking for your newly revised tweaked D700 settings.

I've gotta agree that there's something else going on with this update. I just stuck my Sigma 50 on the camera and took a few snaps around the house. I trided mixed lighting, low lighting, and flash - and I couldn't seem to get a shot out of focus. It's definitely a worthwhile update.

Kudos to Nikon for continuing to support the older cameras.

Must be one heck of an update, my battery is 1/2 charged and it says, "battery low - cannot update firmware".

p.1 #16 · D700 firmware update

Intend to update 3 of our D700 firmware over the weekend, but after updating just one of our 3 cameras found that the focus hunt in low light with the 24-70mm f/2.8G. But after factory reset the problem goes away, will investigate further before deciding if needed to downgrade back to D700_0103.bin.

Seems like one's previous custom setting do affect how the camera will perform after update. Maybe Nikon should post an advice to reset to factory setting before updating to be sure that non of the setting affect its performance after update.

For those who are going to update, please make sure that you have a copy of the older s/w ready just in case.

Good Luck!

firmware updating which involves erasing and installing new code and is a power intensive operation. regardless of size of the code to be written if a certain battery level is not seen by the install program it will not allow the procedure to be done lest your camera be turned into a doorstop. it protects you from yourself.

just like writing to a card vs reading. the reading is easy writing not so much.

It should be SOP to do the 2 green dot reset...heck, I have a couple of buddys that do that PRIOR to installing
the firmware upgrade. Low light AF has definitely been improved and gun to my head, the A WB is less warm
or yellow if you wish...indoors w/mixed lighting. I run an EN-EL4a in the grip and I thought I was shootin' with my
D3 the other morning. Tough BIF outing, 78 shots taken...no misses! Nikon did us a solid, if I'm lyin' I'm dyin'

+100. Upgraded on Saturday and then shot my daughter's dance recital on Sunday. AF much better and the overall WB seems to be more accurate than it was last year when I shot her recital at the same location.

Very happy with whatever Nikon decided to do with this last update.

Updated from 1.02A/B to 1.04A/1.03B:

There is no difference in regards to white balance under tungsten lighting whatsoever with newer firmware. Since I shoot a lot indoors/low-light, the update somehow drops the accuracy of focus on small items (has harder time locking onto small objects, while 1.02A/B locks confidently). The speed in low-light focusing also feels similar (using 80-200mm AF-S). These are my personal findings flashing from 1.02A/B to latest and back in same lighting scenarios (YMMV).
