Got my 400 f/2.8 II in decent working condition finally, I think. Here are a few from today with the 2X III mounted on the 1DX.
The images of the pet hummers were taken at almost MFD but still cropped about 2.5X (linearly). The image of the Spotted Towhee was cropped about a factor of 2 and was quite a ways away - bigger bird. That of the really large Band-tailed Pigeon was cropped only about 60%.
Pare Romy, that shows a very good resolving power of the 500 f4 + stacked TCs combo, and 40D is one good camera too.
Naturally, we know how good 400 f/2.8 IS + 2xTC is.

Canon 2XTCII, 70-200L II at the long end and the 7D hand held. I really like that IS. My 200L f2 does better and almost seems like no degradation to the IQ.
You guys have posted some insanely great images.
The last image is very interesting, not to mention colorful and sharp. Nice work!

Indeed. Also, the 500 f4 + stacked 1.4x TCs had working AF with the 40D, and this was used in the posted sample.
I'll conclude herwith my contribution to Romy's fine thread, which contribution should demonstrate clearly that Andy Rouse (?) was right in asserting that 2xTCs are useless and detrimental to serious pro photography. What do I know, I am just an old amateur hack pijun shooter.
These shots portray a Loud pijun aka "The nest builder".
Shot with 1DX + 500 f/4 IS MkII + 2xTC MkIII off a monopod.

This is way short of the quality I see in all of the images here. This is my poor contribution.

America Cup 45 meter trials on SF Bay.
Heat shimmer is what has really lowered the IQ in this shot. Shooting across large distances on water will always cause problems even if you think the water is cold. I have shots across a few hundred metres of water with massive heat shimmer.
