Embarrassing I know, but it never came up before and hasn't worked like this on any of my other cameras, but I just found out if you set the Shutter Speed and Aperture manually with Auto ISO the camera changes the ISO to what it thinks is a correct exposure!
OK, no exposure compensation but with skilful use of the metering mode (spot mode perhaps) this will be very useful.

Whoa, this has been a bug bear of us for ages and as far as I know all the cameras do it, certainly 7D, 1D III/IV/X do this. It's absolutlely pathetic Canon refuse to fix this in a simple FW upgrade.

Amazing what you can find out if you look

That is what Auto ISO means. OH: And yes, the lack of compensation makes it basically useless. I do use auto ISO on my Nikons though.

Sadly it's pretty much useless without EC I don't want shots which are under or over exposed.
It was one of my points back to Canon in my feedback to them. They just crippled it. They clearly didn't have photographers check the feature out or they would have got the same feedback as I gave.
Really annoying as it's much more useful than the other modes in many circumstances

On the 1D Mark4 and 1DX, there is exposure compensation available in 1/8th of a stop increments up to one full stop either way! You'll find it in Custom Function settings, Exposure and it's called AE Micro Adjustment!

I forgot to say that, when your looking through your view finder with this function set in Manual Mode you EV scale will still read neutral! But it does work, and works well!

Yes, but this is more like a tuning or calibration function for when you feel the camera's meter needs adjustment (like lenses and AFMA). The EC that Pixel Perfect and Phil are talking about would allow quick tweaks via the scroll wheel without requiring you to take your eye off the viewfinder and enter into a menu setting. Correct me if I'm wrong...

You'll forgive me if I wait for one of the people who mentioned lack of EC to clarify whether I understood correctly or not. Especially since your reply didn't explain why I am wrong in my understanding.

I think you understand just fine. Definition:
Exposure compensation is a technique for adjusting the exposure indicated by a photographic exposure meter, in consideration of factors that may cause the indicated exposure to result in a less-than-optimal image.
