it's also my way to try to avoid spending $250 on something that I essentially already own and is, at worst equal in quality in every way and likely better at the edges at the least. $250 ain't a penny.
but anyway if it got me f/8 and the canon one couldn't do that no matter what (as it now seems, going by the latest 1DX word) then it's all cool (and even better it's kinko), unfortunately it seems like even the kenko might not give f/8

Here are some 600II and 2xTCIII examples. Works great for big birds Still haven't tried smaller and faster ones. IQ is great, takes a bit more sharpening than with the 1.4TCIII or bare lens but still really sharpens up nicely.

Once again not everyone owns or wants to own the 100-400L, as hard as that is for you to believe . I do not own the 100-400L.
I'm talking 70-300L and for that lens he said: "the combo with the 70-300L hunts. it does not report the aperture correctly. [with the kinko]".
Perhaps if you were calm you would've noticed that he mentioned something other than your the only lens in the world that deserves to exist, 100-400L , in that post of his.
Sorry I wasn't saying to get the 100-400L, but pointing out the EXIF is recorded correctly and assumed it would be so on the 70-300L. I hadn't noticed Kevin had mentioned the 70-300L in the last sentence not reporting aperture correctly.

I tested the new firmware with my 400mm f/5.6L + 1.4X II. The AF no longer hunts like it did when I taped the pins. Focus speed is fairly sluggish...slightly more sluggish than a 50D would with just the 400mm. Granted I did this after work and the light wasn't too good (ISO 4000). Here's a picture I took with the combo.
Regarding the flash focus assist, focus is achieved instantaneously versus half a second as before. I think it works great. I don't use video so no comment on that fix.

for clarification, 70-300L does not report the correct exif with the Kenko extender. it does so with the 100-400L. autofocus works, but its very jittery, and probably not good for the usm motor.

Just found out about the firmware! But what about the flashing focus?

Just a note about AFMA post FW update. It seems that with the lens which is on the camera during the update zeros out the previous settings. Other lenses have retained their settings. So the lesson seems to be to remove the lens from the camera before applying the FW update.
Whether, the accuracy has changed, I can't say yet. If anyone else reports AFMA inconsistencies, I guess I'll have to re-MA all my lenses! Surely not!

I had +10 AFMA on my EF500mm before firmware upgrade but have been shooting with 1.4x and 2x on most times. Will check tonight with bare lens once I got back.

How does the 5D3 with 1.2.1 firmware compare to the 1DX with 1.2.1 firmware in terms of f/8 lens AF performance?
Lens of interests are the following
800/5.6 + 1.4x III
600/4.0 II + 2x III
500/4.0 + 2x III
Salamat.
I tested my 5D MKIII with my 800mm f/5.6 L with 1.4x III yesterday photographing Snowy Plovers. I find the AF hunting a lot. Could have been my AF settings plus I didn't have the best light either as it was cloudy and dull. I still want to do more testing before I give my final opinion.

Oh well sounds like it will be impossible to make the 70-300L plus extended AF well no matter what TC .
Wish there was an option to force a toggle on to toss it into f/8 mode and manually inform the camera that a TC was being used with a lens without the extra pins.
Oh well. What a shame, because the IQ quality is perfectly solid with the combo. I suppose it could be sort of be used as is on very stationary targets if you forced it refocus a bunch of times and fired away and picked out the one frame where the focus settled in OK. The way it oscillates the AF it make me worried it strains the AF system though as you mention too so maybe liveview 10x is the only way to go, tricky though.
Likewise the AF also fails when using extension tubes with the 70-300L to unfortunately.

You may have to get the 400mm f/2.8 II after all...

I'll see if I can post some 100% crops later.
Thanks!
That doesn't surprise me a bit under lighting conditions as you describe..
