There was an issue fixed in the new firmware related to AF performance with flash AF assist enabled. There was a perceptable (2 or 3) second delay before the AF would seem to lock on and focus. This was with 580 classics in my case, but others reported it with 600 and 580v2's.

With my 580EX II, the delay was usually about 1/2 second. The longest delay I experienced was about a second. With the fix, it was almost instantaneous so...a huge improvement.
