I think London can be a great place for photography but I guess it depends on your favourite style/theme.
There's some obvious tourist traps which can be a nightmare and already photographed a million times, but there's also some gems that are less obvious.
I've taken many shots of the obvious places but tey to keep them to dusk or dawn.
Slightly off the beaten track:
St Dunstan in the East Church, bombed out during the war, now just the outer wall ramain and has been made a garden, trees and vines now cover what were the windows.
Alleyways, lanes and courtyards between St Pauls and Blackfriars, including the Kings Wardrobe, Apothecaries hall, numerous passages and other tiny courtyards.
The city (square mile) on weekends, dead, devoid of people (except around St Pauls), great architecture, old pubs, favourite spot - Leadenhall market
Temple, great for archirecture, especially good if Temple Church is open. I also like Fountains court in Inner Temple featured in Dickens works.
Go East ! - I love the docklands although now mostly redeveloped there's some great sights between Limehouse and Canary Wharf and also the Royal docks are worth a visit, great views on the Royal Victoria dock footbridge. Spital fields in east London is also a great place to visit, the backstreets are full of characterfull buildings and history.
Greenwich, great view of the Wren masterpiece that is the Old Royal Naval Collage from Island Gardens on the opposite side of the Thames, Greenwich itself has the foot tunnel, Cutty Sark, great little market and unspoilt town, The chapel and painted hall at the Old Royal Naval College, National Maritime museum, Greenwich park with awesome views over London and Chestnut trees over 400 years old.
If you that way inclined there are the magnificent 7 victorian cemeteries to be visited (search wikipedia for listing)
My ideas for next projects include a sunset to sunrise shoot, shoot sunset somewhere then spend the night wandering around town taking photo's untill heading off somewhere for a sunrise shoot. Probably best in mid summer near the longest day. Also advisable to bring a buddy, walking round in the wee hours with £££ of kit!
I also fancy trying to take photo's of some of the tube stations, there's everything from ultra-modern (Canary Wharf, Westminster right back to the first stations like baker street).
Maybe I should write this up somewhere

As long as you don't wander into Clapham or decide to go to Aly Paly through Haringey you will be fine..
I walked a lot between MI6 (ex-employer was next door) and Millenium Wheel on both sides on the Embankment. The bridge near Vauxhall did offer nice views of Battersea Power station during sunset.
On weekends I did walk local parks in South Wimbledon and New Molden, but one is indeed weary of carrying a kit especially near Tooting.
Depending on what you shoot and what mood you want to create there is an immense amount of places to shoot at. One of my particular favourites are areas around Fleet St.
Another thing that put me off is security and "pigs" insisting on one "photographing strategic objects". I was stopped and searched on Embankment when 2 coppers decided to harass me for shooting HP.
Luckily I never got bothered by MI6 security even though I spent a long time shooting around their grounds.
Unfortunately I lost nearly all London walkabout shots in a massive HD crash (1Tb across 5 drives totally dead). Essentially nothing special since my skills at that time were snapshot level (they are still there probably...).
Here are few of the shots that survived. Not an alt though and not quite 35/1.4 shots either, so sorry about that..
