I've been down that road. Its ridiculous. They wouldn't budge. Do what I did and be shady back to them. Decline the offer. Get the email saying you declined. Call and accept the repair. Once you get your gear back call your CC for fraud charges. Unfortunately that's what I was forced to do. This impact damage is bull. I'm actually getting upset remembering it.

Wow. That's not just "illegal," that is literally criminal. As in, you could go to prison for that. Is that really worth the $500 or whatever they want to charge you?

If I were you, I would not be spreading my confession around on online forums.

I'm still pretty shocked about this. It would never occur to me to pull something as dishonest and probably illegal as that.

I mean, Best Buy absolutely gouges customers on ridiculous, $40 HDMI cables that work exactly the same as $3 cables... so I think I'll just put a few in my backpack next time I'm there. That's okay, right? It's not fair to gouge customers, so anything I want to do at that point is justified.

Well if Nikon wants to sue me. Go for it. They can pm me and I'll give them my address. I'm sure I can find a few lawyers who would like to start a D800 class action law suit. My D800 was under warranty before they hit me with the "impact damage" claim. I filed fraud because they are fraudulently taking my money. End of story.

No response since I asked for more analysis about where the impact was and how that makes the lens "chatter".

I'm still waiting for my d600 to be returned to me. They Received it the beginning of december for a failed mirror. Still waiting on parts. Leaving for a trip in 10 days. Getting rather pissed.

You are an idiot. Repeat that to yourself a few times to get a bit of perspective, lose the dumb bravado ... and turn your brain back on. There may still be hope.

Getting the store involved is a good idea. Especially since you noticed the problem prior to the damage to the bayonet and camera and if there is no other evidence of impact. This is one of the reasons to buy from a small brick and mortar store that you can have a relationship with.

I once had a Stihl weed eater that seized up one month after expiration of warranty, With the shop vouching for my honesty of always using Stihl fuel additive Stihl authorized them to rebuild it under warranty.

Got my "final" response from Nikon today:

"I understand that the customer wants more information to make a decision. However due to our flat billing policy there is not much more we can offer. Please find my last description below. If the customer is not willing to accept that I will return the unit unrepaired and take off the shipping charges for you.

These units are fine-tuned optical instruments and as such an impact can cause the system to be put out of alignment. The bent aperture will requires a replacement of the aperture unit. This may also indicate a mount issue causing a communications problem and a focus issue as the film (Sensor plain) will not be level to the mount. As these are all covered under the same pricing system it is irreverent to speculate “did this cause this, did that cause that”. It needs to be noted that generally impact damage is priced higher than that was quoted and if less damage is found the price will be lowed. If more damage is found we still may require to re-estimate the unit. However I am hoping that that will not be required. Please note that this is my final explanation of the situation. If not satisfactory I will return the unit unrepaired.

Richard Lehmann"

I want my camera and lens back for spring and no 3rd party repair places come to mind so I approved both. I'm doing extensive testing in the store before I accept it, because my honest and true gut feeling is that it will have to be sent back. I've found a way to not be in any way the cause of AF malfunction. Basically I told the store that I have $6,000 worth of gear that I sent in and better come back working perfectly or else it's getting sent back the same day.

Now I wait for my gear, and a bill that is not finalized...absolutely shocked and disgusted with Nikon Canada. I thought about getting my stuff back and selling it, buying brand new and will probably be the same price as getting it "repaired." But that just seems dishonest on my part and I couldn't do it on a clean conscience.

Hmm, I just sent in my D4...

BTW, how did you get direct communication with them, is that because the store sent it? I am wondering if I will even receive acknowledgment that they received it (yesterday).

The Camera Store here in Calgary sent it the D800 and 80-400G for me. They've been great but unfortunately the middlemen here, acting as a communication relay between me and Nikon. I received the Nikon rep's email, Richard Lehmann, ([email protected]) and he refuses to talk to me directly both through email and telephone.

I've extremely disappointed with Nikon and I want a way to talk to them on the phone. At this point, Richard at Nikon has basically said approve service or f*ck off.

Their latest estimate has been at ~$1,000 CDN for both the lens and body. But if that system doesn't AF to perfection when I receive it in the store, it's getting sent back, and back, and back. I really hope Richard at Nikon Canada finds this somehow. It's unfortunate that making a stir is the only way to be taken seriously, because apparently $6,000 worth of gear is amateur hour to them.

Now all I can do is wait and see what transpires.

Wow, another imapact damage on a finely tuned instrument. The Nikon rep did not actually say F off. He basically said they will have to take it apart to see what is really wrong. He won't talk to you directly. It seems to me to be a "liability issue". Opening him up to a potential lawsuit because of his words is nothing he wants to get into. Therefore, he is "safe" merely quoting company policy and using the words of the company policy to back him up. Be patient and see how it plays out.

Good grief, if I were in your shoes, I wonder if I wouldn't just sell the non-functioning gear either for parts or describe it as "possibly repairable", save up and then buy a 5d Mk III.

It's kinda funny...I send all my repairs, warranty or not, to Authorized Photo Repair in Chicago. I've NEVER had any "impact damage" thrust on me when I return a body for repair. The Nikon service con artists are just bumping their profit with this aggressive tactic. I agree with a previous poster. It's borderline fraud.

I'm a bit confused.
Is there not actually impact damage clearly visible in the photos?
Maybe it's a misunderstanding about what "impact damage" means to Nikon?
What they mean is "not normal wear and tear".

at $580 I kinda doubt they are going to straighten it. more like R&R the system board that contains the combined slots and control circuitry.

Nikon is hurting right now and trying to leech all the money they can from customers.
