thanks J_Andrew.

Please could an x100s owner(s) clarify for me:

When manual focussing, does focus peaking only happen in the zoomed in view or can you get it in the standard EVF view as well?

Thanks!

It happens in the EVF/screen on the back, zoomed in or not. You can set it so that it automatically zooms in when you move the focus ring, or you can use the button to zoom in.

Thank you. Isn't the point of focus peaking that you don't need to zoom in? At least there's a choice.

Focus peaking even makes it easier to focus when zoomed in.

This is correct - you can use focus peaking with the EVF or LCD, and it appears whether or not the image is zoomed.

What I like to do is use the OVF, and manual focus. I leave the auto manual assist (whatever it's officially called, the feature that automatically zooms when you turn the MF ring) OFF, and to focus I'll use the AE/AF button to lock auto-focus, and then if I want I can flip either the front switch to go to EVF and see the full image with peak, or I can hit the rear command switch to go to zoomed EVF with peak. Allows me to use the OVF 99% of the time, adn either zoomed or unzoomed peaking when I want.

THIS is a pretty good review. I read this after using the camera for about a month, and discovered I was using it set up almost exactly as he suggests.

Oh, the one thing that he doesn't mention in the review that I picked up somewhere else is to put a bit of gaff tape over the little read/write LED that's on the back. It's annoyingly bright, and there is no way to shut it off that I've found.

(BTW at full size you can see THOUSANDS of stars in this image and it wasn't even a very clear night)

Since coming back from Scotland I've felt a little constrained sitting in my cage at work all day and living and working in the same house. So I've tried every day to get out for a decent walk and last night at about 10pm I decided to go and sleep outside. I didn't have a sleeping bag but it was +7 C so I was nice and warm (too warm?) in my bivvy bag and it was lovely being out at night. You hear and smell all the things you miss in the day and see everything differently. Unfortunately I was very visible from 0400 and it was daylight from 0500 so I packed up and left the field before I got caught. Had probably 3-4 hours sleep in total but it felt like a bit of an adventure in our staid old village.

I just got my X100S from a fellow FMer on Saturday and I'm loving it already. It's just such a fun camera to tote around and get different shots with. I am finding that it's easy to manually focus, although that becomes more difficult in lower light situations. I'm also just pretty new to the manual focusing game. The first B&W shot is straight out of the camera with some cropping and the second is my own conversion. Looking forward to hanging around the Alt forum quite a bit from now on.
