Mhh, where I live (NL euro) the Nikon is listed for 17K, the Canon for 12K. The Nikon is not yet in the shops so maybe in the near future the price will drop to the Canon level or lower. .

Why do I use two D4s? Simple, the very best VF, focus and DR in very low light. The 1Dx is (probably) better in good light. Canon have optimized their AF for brighter light and that 12fps-maybe because of that Mk III think so long ago.

Back to sharpness: if you shoot RAW, check out Nik Sharpener Pro 3. It's incredibly flexible, using either control points or sharpness by eyedropped color to sharpen only what you want and how you want, without increasing noise excessively. You can also adjust microcontrast and sharpening levels for print. I can get my NEX-6 to roughly match the sharpness of my D7100.

Sigma 35 mm 1.4 on my 1dx, and 85mm 1.4 G on my friend's D4. He does have the sigma 35mm 1.4 ordered for the D4 so that will be coming in for him as soon as it's in stock. I am pretty confident though that regardless of the lens the D4 performs better in single AF mode in low light and can lock focus in much lower light... and in continuous/Ai servo mode the difference I found was big in low light. Where the 1dx would hunt, the D4 would lock w/o hesitation. D4 would also lock onto subjects with much lower contrast. The visibility of the AF points is also MUCH better with the constantly lit points.
Even though I love my 1dx, I would prefer the D4 when shooting in places like a wedding reception. This is based on my personal experience with the cameras. I was thinking of making a video comparison between the two since there aren't a lot out there, and the comparison in my original post is flawed and even fooled me into thinking the D4 is far behind the 1dx.
Seems like this thread keeps getting bumped. As I stated before, my final conclusion was the D4 is amazing and produces ridiculously sharp images. I'd be happy with either the 1dx or D4.
I do think the D4 is the only camera in Nikon that I would love to buy though, given all the oil/dust issues with d600 and the left side AF issues with d800. But that's a different topic....Show more →
Another bump for and old thread. Exactly my conclusion for the AF between my 1Dx, my D800e and my friend's D4 in low light.

I find the quality of Nikon lenses to be very bad - frankly I think they just suck... I have 24-70, 70-200, 85 1.4 and 50 1.4 all of which require fine tune adjustments. Problem is that the required adjustment varies based on aperture, focal length and even subject distance all of which really piss me off and seriously consider switching the system. The lenses and cameras have been off for adjustment few times right now but Nikon still has not been able to resolve the issue. What is the point of spending 20k+ in equipment when it doesn't perform they way it should?

Why do you keep them if you think they suck so badly?
Sell them, get Canon, be happy and stop whining.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong not sure if it's mentioned canons have a weaker aa filter. Well the ones I've used seem to compared to nikons. I had a 1dsmii awhile back and it barely needed sharpening when I'd shoot with it.

Seriously, I wouldn't be hanging around a system that I thought sucked especially when you've listed their top their lenses. You need to be looking into what others have to offer for your style of shooting.
Pentax have announced they will be releasing a full frame camera this year, and have already released their 70-200mm f2.8. Something to consider as C@#$% isn't the only other game in town.

i really kind of doubt that it will make a real difference.

@Chris, grow up, what do you expect me to do? After number of visits to Nikon which claims the camera and lenses operate within the specs what would you do?! I just don't see why Nikon does not stand behind their product and when they can't fix it just replace it.
The back/front focus many times is blamed on user error which is not the case here, I know two other photographers who are also having same issue and are considering switching the system.
I would hardly call it whining when you buy pro gear that does not perform and company that makes it does not stand behind it. The way I see it, anyone buying any Nikon gear better test the heck out of it before handing over any money or they might be in for a huge surprise. Sucks too cause I've been Nikon Pro user for over 10 years.

I am not trolling, I've been way too busy for any of that BS and for most part found ways to go around the issue but on my last shoot the situation was just driving me crazy so either I have bad luck with the lenses or god knows what.
What I wonder is how many have noticed issues with Lenses and Fine Tune - that is needing to change it based on Aperture, Focal Length or subject distance?

You could do the same as I did. Sell everything, start over with an other brand, be happy and stop whining.

i will say that the use of AF is an acquired/learned skill. i shot Canon for 5 years and its AF was a definite learning curve that did not end well. as i said essentially in another thread they both claim superior technology and lightning speed and will fail w/o learning what, where, how and when. i was a canon pro and these days i'm my own pro.
i own nothing below a 2.8. so i guess we choose our own poisons. i'm a simple archivist.

center point. AF-ON. focus & recompose. that's how I get the sharpest images at 1.4. good luck using your outer points for 1.4
1.4 requires SKILLLLZZZ maaaaan!
