Wow Peter, you're starting to get stuff with your 1DX and Mk II teles that rivals what you used to create with the magical 1DIIn and "ancient" teles!
Jess, there is some truth in that. Proximity to target is one of the most important IQ factors in wildlife photography. Small and agile gears are hard to beat re ease of use and effectiveness, whenever we can get close. Unfortunately, all too often we can't get close enough, and then we resort to these unwieldy, inert and hard to operate lenses.
Understood. It's a little like the general statement that the best camera is the one you actually have with you. I do think the 1DX is a fantastically capable camera even though it gives up some pixel density to other models. I'm a long way from being able to touch a 600, but from reviews it seems that the weight reduction in the Mk II is substantial, which makes it more portable and presumably a little bit more "aimable/panable", though compared to a shorter focal length on a crop body, maybe not so much.
Wow, you've done a great job of capturing the feeling of a region that most of us will never experience first hand! I love the shot of the person entering the passage through the ice. Love the whole set!
Here's one from about nine years ago, long before Lightroom. There's still a framed print in my camera room, but I'm not sure where the original file is. It was one of the few days that we've had an attractive snowfall and I had a chance to do something with it photographically. I'm sure I posted this somewhere back when I shot it, but here it is again.
The second shot was today, an attempt at hand-held "macro" with the G10. When I don't have anything on which to brace myself, I feel like a twig swaying in the breeze. Fortunately there wasn't any breeze, so the branch with water droplets didn't add to my body's motion.
Pierre, that looks as idyllic as a Hollywood movie set!
Glad to see more beautiful snow scenes appearing. Here, we had near-record heat, with a side product of fog. I went out and played in the mist for a while this morning, and made a "fog blog" post here.
Love all the snowy photos! It's been in the mid 70's here the last few days. Looking like we won't have a winter in Georgia for the second year running...
This one is sure to brighten your cold and foggy morning. He showed up at the county landfill Friday and is a lifer for me and doubly nice since they aren't supposed to be this far north!
