ooo it might work...
I've been trying to embed photos from flickr... I think I might have stumbled on something that works...
sort of. Anyway.
This is one of the first pictures I took with the rx1. the output is better than any other camera I have had,
with the least amount of effort on my part. This little camera is fun!
Does anyone know how to use AF (I want to be moving the little box to all parts of the frame to
set focus) but still have the autofocusing be done by a different button (and save the shutter release just
for picture taking purposes?)

My solution is to set "Func. of AEL button" to "AF/MF Control Hold" under the Gear menu #3. I leave the front AF dial set to DMF, use the shutter half-press to AF, then press and hold the AEL button to disable AF if needed. If I already have MF dialed in then I'll hold the AEL button before half-pressing the shutter to prevent AF from taking over.
It's backward to having AF on a dedicated button but the closest solution I've found on this camera.

Usually no bigger than 1200 on a side.
There is a special high rez thread where people post bigger high rez files
You can just edit your post and upload a bigger version..

Thanks. The RX1/R really was an ideal camera for this situation, both from an IQ perspective and a portability perspective. It took a bit of effort to get to this place, and I was very glad for my RX1R's small size and weight as I was climbing, slipping and sliding my way to and from the cave entrance.

I like that first one Michael.
So, I also got an A7 now and it makes me appreciate the tiny RX1 even more. Right when you press that shutter you know how spoiled we are by the soft RX1 leaf shutter. I also like the shutter button of the RX1 much better. 2 clear stages (half press, full press). The one on the A7 is much more spongy and sensitive.
I took the RX1 with me to the hospital recently, to take some snapshots of a newborn (not my child he he). Nobody notices that you're taking photos and the RX1 without EVF looks like a P&S. So discreet.
Might as well share some of those snapshots:
