Not true. I am a fan of lenses that delivery good image quality. I could care less which brand they come from. I carefully compare lenses on each of their qualities and their real world performance having both studied photography as art and optical engineering academically. Which is why I consult for major review websites on how to develop testing methods and rate lenses.
The initial batch of photos from this lens appeared to have some very serious issues. I did not say that the lens HAS these issues my exact words were that the lens "looks" like it has issues.
I am actually a huge fan of my Sigma 85mm 1.4 over the Canon 85mm 1.2L II I replaced with it, which has much less purple fringing and amazing sharpness and bokeh.
Flimsy flame bait is not a good way to have a productive discussion. 35mm 1.4 is one of my favorite focal lengths hands down. Due to financial considerations of updating all my photo editing computers, all my bodies and all my zooms I have to let go of my own Canon 35mm 1.4L, but within 3-4 months I will be in the market for another 35mm 1.4 lens.
I will be carefully comparing the Canon 35mm f/2.0 IS, Canon 35mm 1.4L and Sigma 35mm 1.4 and I will chose whichever one is the best regardless of price or brand.
The Onion bokeh is about the same as the other examples. I am noticing less square bokeh though with your copy than the one posted on Sigma's blog and on nepo. More samples would be very useful. I will be looking to loan a Canon 35mm f/2 35mm 1.4 & Sigma 35mm 1.4 for comparison in the next 2-3 weeks....Show more →
Your comments in this thread are just getting more and more ridiculous.........

Hi Legion5, me again. Just to clarify; the motivation behind your sale of your 35L is not an issue, I've sold many lenses I liked very much. What can certainly be perceived as being more problematic is that you had a 35L to sell in the first place, especially as you entered the thread with your violent dislike of the Sigma at the bottom of page 5 when at the top of the same page avuroski had posted:

If Lens Rentals is correct, watch for a massive price drop on the 35L used market in coming months...
So I was merely highlighting, somewhat playfully I admit, a potential conflict of interest. Apologies if you think I was being over-cynical.

What Edward said, but I'll add a few details.
I got another six copies Friday and tested them. That's not nearly enough to determine sample variation but the other six were all fairly close to the first one I tested.
I've shot with it the last 3 days and find AF is quite good. That was my first concern. I also did not notice any major focus shift or any issues with near - far focus changing. Note, I didn't do microfocus adjustment because I didn't see any need after some quick testing.
Bokeh, as has been noted, isn't the greatest, but it's not awful by any means. But my shooting style at this focal length if I'm looking for bokeh I generally am focusing close with the background far. Most lenses' bokeh looks good like that. I also postprocess a lot -- if I want prettier bokeh I'll make some. But I can't make more resolution. So my priorities are probably different than others.
I don't do the 'better than the other lens' argument much because depending on what you are looking for it may or may not be the best for you. But it certainly gives great value for the money.
BTW - Lensrentals has 8 of the 35 Ls for sale at the moment. My popularity with the sales manager is not good today. Not good at all.

As Roger said above...the bokeh isn't as good as other 35's, but it's not horrible, either. here is a quick comparison of the same swing(picture from pg 8) of the Sigma vs a Zeiss 35 1.4. The compositon is different, but you can see how smooth the Zeiss is. But, the Sigma is just as sharp, and no CA whatsoever, whereas the Zeiss has some. Hard to tell on these images, since the resizing, but...

It's safe to say that the Sigma f/1.4 bokeh is a dream next to Canon's 35mm f/2. I'm hoping the new IS version will be a big improvement in this area.

I actually just got mine today! I don't post too much anymore..just not enough time with two boys, 5 and 1, and a wife that works every other weekend!!
But.. I have had a Zeiss 35 1.4(fantastic lens, no doubt!), 2 Samyang 35 1.4's(another fantastic lens, especially for the price), and currently a Nikon 35 1.4 ai-s lens, all on a Canon 1D4!
In order of quality, I would rate the Samyang as the best overall! The Zeiss was super, super, super sharp from f2 smaller, and very sharp wide open...just suffered from lots of CA! But the bokeh was to die for...nothing else could match it!!
The Nikon is very nice..not as sharp wide open(but is sharp...), and stopped down, probably the match of any other 35 out there, minus the Zeiss 1.4....but it makes up for everything in SIZE!!!! Which is HUGE...especially after lugging around a Zeiss 35 1.4, which is a brick!!
This Sigma 35 1.4, is definitely the match for sharpness wide open as the Zeiss's...and haven't stopped it down too much yet, since I just got it. As far as CA's..they are almost non-existent! So far....The bokeh seems a little harsh and busy, but not bad(leave me alone...just giving my 2 cents!!!), and I have only seen a hint of the onion bokeh so far! I'm not a total pixel peeper, but I think this lens will be a keeper!

I would not even know which is which, I see no difference.

On the swing pictures, do others agree with me that the Zeiss contrast is far superior? I would go so far as to call the Sigma contrast harsh, at least in that image.
p.9 #18 · Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM first impressions
The background is not really the same in both the pictures and at least part of the difference seems to be related to amount of blur rather than quality of blur. So hard to exactly pass judgement. For this comparison to be more useful, the framing has to be as close to identical as possible.

Next time plz don't show the answer first. It will be interesting to see the result of everyone's guessing.
The composition is different and for S35 it got a more complicated one with tree and etc. Hard to tell from these two pictures.

Here are a few more taken today. Really starting to like this lens...a lot! The resolution wide open is pretty astounding!!
Roger made a comment on his website about the resolution figures, and this lens shines wide open!! Check out the pics below, all wide open...sorry for pics of our cat, but...if you checkout the fur, you can see what it pulls out.
SOOC .jpgs with default camera sharpening(1D4), and nothing done in LR except a 10% crop on the sper pic on the left hand side.
Roger....Using the resolution figures from your first lens, vs the others, how do the numbers correlate to sharpness, as far as the eye can tell?? the higher the number is better, but what numerical value makes lens A sharper than lens B? For the naked eye to notice? I know you said something in your 50mm shootout back in January, concerning the same thing...
Gregg
@robert...I love documenting my son. It's the best feeling.
It's about all I shoot these days! And I agree!!
