Greg, as a rule of thumb a 10% difference in MTF50 is barely detectable in a reasonable size print or comparing 50% jpgs on a monitor. There's variation of course but that's a good rule of thumb.
The other reason I like that number is if I take a given camera and lens and take a number of autofocus shots of the same subject, rapid fire, they'll vary about 10% in sharpness.
For both reasons I think a difference of less than 10% has little practical importance.

Hey Michelle,
You're right! It's all about the children!! And they let me know often enough, too!!!!
The spider was no bigger than a quarter. and the shot was at MFD, too.
Here is a pic of the spider at f2..adef difference, but sot huge

It's about time someone took the "Picture of my cat" test! I was getting nervous. I will now definitely get a cat.
Don't knock it!! They make great still subjects!! I even got Duncan to look at me!!

On the swing pictures, do others agree with me that the Zeiss contrast is far superior? I would go so far as to call the Sigma contrast harsh, at least in that image.
I cannot see the difference, honestly. Was trying hard yesterday....

@Ralph and snoochenko...thank you for the kind comments!
I will hopefully do a small comparison between the Sigma 35 and my only other current 35-Nikon 35 1.4ai-s. the Nikon has size going for it, and it is really sharp from f2 and smaller. I will try to get that done in the next couple days.

David...
I had 2 copies of the Samyang, and let me tell you, that lens is really fantastic! Nothing better for the price! Sharp wide open, and from f2-f5.6, it too would be pretty hard to beat. The corners were great, almost wide open!

The SIGMA Merrill DP2M and many hundreds of flickriver images prove they know all about bokeh as well as high resolution.
The early status of this new SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 AF lens is quite interesting and truly warrants a closer look from all thoughtful artists.
A KEY MARKER of quality in this lens is the over-the-top critique from a CANON poster who (1) had no access to the lens (2) used only a single image upon which to base his negative "Impression" and (3) no mention was made of the clear SIGMA price advantage nor of the design advantages which inure from added elements, ED and asph features.
New competition always triggers such basher moves and we should see this as a good reason to look even closer at this product. The filter size (67mm) feature nicely fits the Zeiss ZF.2/ZE MF line.

So to exceed the performance of the Sigma, the new 35L mk II will need to hit the $2K mark and if an extra $1100 is worth what, maybe a bit smoother bokeh, as it's hard to see what else could be done to improve the Sigma, then good luck to you. Sigma tack sharp wide open, has great contrast and colour and apparently AF speed is fast. For me now 35L is of no interest. It's down to the Sigma and new 35 f/2 IS.
