p.2 #1 · Canon Eos 3D is coming !

Now that would be interesting. I've been arguing that Canon may not be interested in releasing a camera that is spec'ed BETWEEN the 10D and the 1's, but I would be very intrigued if I was proved wrong on this point. Here's hoping I get to eat some humble pie soon.

Actually, I don't want to be picky, but part of my job is translating (although not an official translator). You can't always just translate each word individually and then think that the French expression has the same meaning as the two words translated into English. "Sans doute" often means "probably" or "most likely" depending on the context in which it is used. The unambiguous expression would have been "Sans aucun doute". The French magazine most likely chose the "sans doute" expression precisely because of its ambiguity.

Your translation is the most accurate possible, knowing that they on purpose picked an expression with ambiguous meaning.

Hi !
We can argue about the translation, but I know something for sure. Chasseur d'images is a very very serious magazine. You can go on www.luminous-landscape and see what Michael Reichmann thinks about this magazine. For European people, when Chasseur d'Images tell us "sera sans doute visible", they have good informations to tell such things.

Regards
Pete

Serious, serious... well Chasseur d'Images is an old french magazine... who's to say that it necessarily means they are serious... well, they proved to be right most of the time... and able to make us forget when they were wrong...

Their show why DxO does not make them "Serious" in my book :-) At all... well DxO is French, Chasseur d'Image is...

On the other hand, I DO beleive that Canon will come soon (PMA or Photokina) with a 3 digital equivalent. We'll see :-)

We don't need more Canon camera "tweens" (between this body and between that body), what we really want is a 70-200L F4 IS lens "tween $600-$700"

A well-tufted chassis? Maybe a smart-looking body?

In Canon nomenclature, a smaller number denotes a higher grade of camera. On the film side, the EOS 3 was the lowest level professional grade (high reliability) camera. People might guess that if Canon produces a professional grade digital camera, it might also be a "3" something, hence, 3D.

By the same token, a 20D would be below a the 10D in quality. If Canon produced an update of the 10D, it would be something like a 10Dn.

Personally, I'd rather see a high-reliability professional camera with 10D digital capabilities (in other words, a "crippled" 1D) at $2000-2500 than a 10D with fancier digital capabilities.

I won’t claim to know anything about a Digital EOS 3 but I can tell you that four days ago Best Buy entered a new SKU into their computer system. The description is Canon EOS 20D kit with EF-S 18-55mm lens $1499.99 in store date 10/10/04

I usually read this magazine, so here is my opinion about Chasseur d'Images:
- the information provided there are rather serious, but it may happen that a name is wrong. Then, your 3D turns into a 20D or vice-versa
- they usually have a good idea about what is going to happen but when you read a "pre-release announcement" it is really hard to distinguish what is subjective and what is not. For instance, the pre-release of the D70 came with very bad comments (to sum up: "nikon is going to release old stuff in a new box with nothing new") although the review was very positive (shortly: "major improvement upon the D100, great value for money")
- the reviews are not that great. They provide quite a lot of details but they also sometimes make some "big" mistakes. For instance, they were very fast about introducing the DxO analyzer as their new, revolutionary testing method but, in my opinion they should have tested the tester first. Not to take into account ethic problems.
- more importantly, I sometimes feel they are giving too much room to testing and not enough to photography, but they recently released another magazine for that purpose.

I have not read this month's issue (the main topics did not look interesting to me) but I will try to have a closer look.

Thanks for filling me in. I agree, the 10D needs a bit of an update considering the specs of the 300D that has come in just below it.

If there is both a 10D replacement AND a 3D, maybe it would be too much to expect it all at Photokina? Since we already have a 1Ds replacement that is almost a definite at Photokina, not to mention a 300D that will probably see an upgrade soon due to competitive pressures from the D70.

I'm still slightly confused. A 3D would be better than a 10D but a 20D would be lower than a 10D and higher than the 300D? Where would a 32C fit in?

Hi

My opinion :
- "3000D" : 6 MPixels, x1.6 CMOS, 1.5 i/s, Digic, 500/600 euros
- "3D" : 8 MPixels, x1.3 CMOS, 4 i/s up to 16 pics, Digic II, 2000/2500 euros

and perharps a "10D mark II" (20D ?... 30D ?...) with 8 MPixels (marketing reasons...), x1.6 CMOS, 3 i/s up to 12 pics, Digic II, and 1500/1700 euros ?...

Why not !!!

(Salut Xavier... Le dernier numéro de Chasseur d'Image est intéressant je trouve, dommage tu rates qqchose !)

Actually pretty good positioniing of the products except the 3000D could even be as low as 4 or 5 megapixels as a true consumer SLR.

Well, the Canon nomenclature doesn't follow exact rules, but yes, generally a smaller number means more expensive and more professional. Here in Europe you have the EOS 3000 (Rebel G), 300 (300v = Rebel Ti), 30 (Elan 7E, and EOS 33 = Elan 7), 3 and 1-series. If a new version of a specific model comes out, it often had an "n", or more recently a "v" (EOS 300v = Rebel Ti, EOS 30v = Elan 7NE) appended. If it was logical, the 1D Mark II should have been called 1Dv. Probably there was some marketing reason why they didn't choose that name (DV reminds too much of "digital video"??).

In a camera with a single digit (EOS 3, EOS 1-series) you have the fast and accurate 45-point AF system. The two-digit and more digit cameras have 7-point AF.

If the new DSLR would be a 3D, I'd expect 45-point AF, an 1.3x sensor and fast frame rate; if it would be a 10D Mark II, 10Dn, 10Dv, 20D or whatever it's going to be called, I'd expect the same 7-point AF that the current 10D has and an 1.6x sensor and 3fps.

My personal preference would be a new camera in the class of the 10D, with 1.6x, 8.3 MP sensor and the same low-noise characteristics as the 1D Mark II, and I think, since there is already a fast, 8 MP DSLR, it will be more likely that the new DSLR would look more like the 10D than the 1D Mark II.

In Canon nomemclature, a smaller number indicates a higher order of camera. 1D is the top of the line, 10D is lesser, 300D is less than that. A 3D would be just under the 1D.

In the film line, there used to be an EOS 3 that was the lowest of Canon's designated "professional" cameras. So it's just a guess or a wish for a 3-level camera in the digital lineup. But of course, IF they put a camera between the 10D and the 1D, they could decide to give it any number between the two.

By a similar token, if they update the 10D, it would be something like a 10Dn, not a 100D or 20D. A 20D would be a lesser camera between the 10D and the 300D.

Of course, they could decide to just change everything.

THIS IS MY EDUGUESS!!! (all specualtion)

the NEW EOS 3D (MarkI)
will cost about US$2,200 (CDN$3,000)
1> same CMOS sensor size (1.3x crop factor) and 8MP (same as the MarkII)
the camera will be similar in look to the MkII,
(but not have as many features or CF's)
i.e. ~5.0 fps frame rate / slightly smaller buffer...slower write-times
2> all-new flash unit will be unveiled (ETTL-2) with EOS-3D
price point between 420EX & 550EX)

10D price point replacement (US$1200-1500) will be announced 6 months after this camera arrives
New 10D MarkII will use 1.6x crop factor, better buffer and write times, larger monitor, more custom functions,
will be smaller and lighter than EOS 3D (still w/metal body)

PS This will give Canon a 4 dSLR line-up for 2005!
dREBEL / 10D MkII / EOS 3D / EOS 1DMkII

I'm hoping for a replacement, as I'd Iike to pickup two 10d's to replace D60's.
