I really need a 2nd 5D3 body but I'm definitely waiting for the price to permanently dip below $3k. $2900 is in my opinion a fair price for what the 5D3 is capable of and that's where it should have been from the beginning. Now we're all being conditioned to know when Canon comes out with a piece of pro gear, the majority of us won't get it for 6-9 months after it becomes available because of availability issues and the fact the new insane pricing Canon comes up with will drop significantly after a few months. That said, I'm still glad I got the 5D3 when I did despite the $3500 price tag. I've made a lot of money with that camera. But a drop in almost $600 is a very big deal if you're buying 2 bodies. That's another lens you can buy.
I personally would have bought one instead of a D700 if the 5D3 was priced at $2499 yesterday. I shot with Canon for many years, and for the last 2 years I used a Nikon mount Tokina on my 1series. I just needed something "newer" that was built well. As much as I like the IQ of the 5D2, the build is not the best.
Some people have said that the 5D3 isn't worth the upgrade if they have the 5D2. For me, the 5D3 looks like a great camera -- other than the pricing.

+1
And the sooner Canon gets to that price, the better ... for both Canon and buyers.
I guess they can't drop the price with $600 overnight, though, so it will happen is stages.
Next step is $2989 in December . Either officially or with rebates.
IMO what's an even better deal is the 24-105L kit for $3750. You get the 24-105L for an extra $550. Sell it for $750 and you're ahead of the game. Or keep it--great lens for $550.
