I did not realize that you purchased it under 30 days ago. I'd call Adorama and send it in for a replacement. I am sure they'll take care of you.

I really don't want to be thinking about always having two cameras with me in case the $3500 camera breaks.

It's like saying, "Gee, I am going on an important road trip, I'll be towing an extra car along just in case my BMW breaks down".

Well I ALWAYS have two camera bodies whenever I travel or if I think the shoot is important. Four years ago, on the first evening we arrived in Utah for a 21 day expedition I dropped one of my 5DMII bodies on the hotel room floor. The camera was dead! But since I still had a second 5DMII I didn't panic. But I sure learned my lesson! I think you'll find most serious amateur and pro photogs carry more than one body.

By the way an Error 30 is a shutter error (it's in the Manual that came withe the camera) and said manual says on page 371 "Shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery. Operate the power switch, remove and install the battery pack, or use a Canon lens. If the error still persists write down the error number and contact your nearest Canon Service Center."

Sorry to say you probably got a dud. It happens occasionally...pretty sure, however, that statistically, Canon and Nikon probably have a pretty low malfunction rate...especially when you consider what we put this equipment through.

Good luck and hope you can either get a replacement or at least get your body back fast (usually is). And if it is a shutter problem they'll probably change the whole assembly anyways so you'll be as good as new with a zero count!

Cheers

I agree with Arnold1. You're in the 30-day window. Box it and send back for replacement.

Tom, I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but can't you return it to the store you purchased it from? There may be a lemon law in your state. Good luck!

I bought it from Adorama. I am calling them tomorrow to set up an exchange for a new one.

Thanks for letting me vent folks. I'll let you know how it works out.

+1
They've always treated me well. The vast majority of gear has been flawless, but when there has been a defect, the exchange was simple to arrange.

I am very pleased to hear that, Tom. I was confident that Adorama will take good care of you.

First thing I would do is try different lens. This could be a lens issue.
If it's still not working return it to the store.

How would you like to climb a mountain and be faced with an error 30 situation?

Life is uncertain. You could have a Nikon, use it reliably for two years, climb that mountain and be faced with an error 30 situation.

If a photo is so important that it must be captured, then you must bring backup equipment.

BMW cars do break down. So do Canon cameras. If you need high reliability, then you need redundancy. My backup is a 1DIV.

I was Chief Scientist on more than a dozen major scientific sea trials during my 35 year career*. Every critical item had at least one identical backup. That increased the cost of performing each trial significantly. OTOH, the cost of not performing during a seal trial (or during a 'shoot') is far greater. The fact that backups had to be used on more than one trial simply justifies the additional the expense. Same for photomatography.

IOW, if you can tolerate a failure, then you don't need a backup. If you can't tolerate a failure, then you need a backup. If you can't tolerate the concept that expensive devices can fail, then you're in a different situation - out of luck.

* retired in June 2012, woohoo!

It is interesting that instead of calling Canon and schedule repair, people are asking unknown people on forums what to do ... Amazing social networking/forums addiction What different people will suggest you?

For what its worth, I just came back from Rio de Janeiro. I had to work on a 787 Dreamliner that a company just received. Apparently one of the engines had an AD put out on a gearbox and this plane left without it being updated.

Who would of thought a brand new $200,000,000 airplane could have some trouble.
