Well yes, but how many people can shoot exclusively at 800mm?

Most people tend to shoot a range of subjects, and not everyone can afford to own one $10-12K supertele at each focal length. I think that's the real argument for the 600 (or 400 or 500), though it would be great if we could own them all.

But do you belive the people that own the 800 lens, don't have shorter lenses also? This is a lens that you usually buy after owning a few other tele lenses. And it's not like you must own super tele lenses for every focal length. And it would not help you that much to own a super tele lens for every focal length. Would you bring 3-4 of those lenses with you when shooting?
It's not like I shoot exclusively at 800mm. But when shooting birds which is my main reason to have it, I shoot 800 or longer at least 95% of the time.
How many times are you too close to a bird compared to the times you are too far away

I agree with Lars Johnsson. A bare lens will always beat another with TC.

Well let's not exaggerate. I depends how bad the bare lens is and how good the one with the TC is.

Well Lars I have it on good authority that those of us that resort to longer FL obviously aren't skilled enough to get closer. Real men apparently stick to 400mm and use ninja stealth techniques to get as close as they like.

I think you've used the same photo for all your lenses, so I'm guessing it's a stuffed specimen against coloured cardboard and you just move closer or further away to suit the lens.

Nah....way too much overlapping, plus all the testing time spent on multiple options.

Peter's canon lens collection is only half of the family treasure...

Here is Peter's evil twin making images for his "BIF with fast Nikon glass" thread

I believe he has wired the lenses in parallel to give him the equivalent of f/0.5.

If all those lenses could be made to "feed" just one CMOS, then that equivalent f/0.5 just might work.

We need to get a hold of a removable MF back from Phase One say, that should do the trick.

It's not unusual in the astronomy community to deploy an array of receiving antennae to explore the universe.

After reading many a post on this long and old thread, I believe the winner is the 600. The fact remains that the free market has already judged the winner for us. A used 800 can be had for better than 30% off retail. Try to get a used 600 for that discount.

Just wait until the 800 II is announced with reduced weight, smaller mfd, improved IQ and AF speed with 1.4x TC III and I'll bet 800 sales increase rapidly again. I'd say a 200-400L/500L + 800L II combo would be ideal (for powerball winners or Petkal).
