I haven't seen one disassembled yet but on most there is a board behind the LCD. Just looking at that picture hurts. Hope it's a simple repair and it doesn't set you back too much.
Haven't read through this entire thread but wanted to share that I have had some success in calling the credit card company and learning that they have a coverage for things like this.
Worth a phone call perhaps...assuming the OP used a credit card for the purchase of course.
Rooster, the camera was in my Thinktank Retrospective bag.... my friend's mistake was having it on his back car seat where it was leaning against the interior of the door.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions guys. We are still somewhat in shock at the low repair cost but it looks like the back panel and LCD screen are the only ones being swapped out. My buddy has already reimbursed me for the full repair cost, plus shipping for both ways.
Glad it was a relatively inexpensive repair. I've learned from stories like this, to hang the camera bag strap over the headrest of the car seat, and even use the seat belts to keep the bags in place. I'm sure your friend was mortified when it happened.

My D800 was dropped and met a blunt object on the ground. LCD screen is cracked as well as the back panel bent in. I know these two will have to be replaced by Nikon USA repair. Any idea what other components may need to be replaced? The camera won't turn on.
I wounder if you had the plastic LCD cover on it if it would have not been as bad?
Now that I think about it... I think the plastic cover would've absorbed the shock and saved the camera from a trip to the service repair center. I have the Giottos glass LCD cover on my D3s and it's a perfect fit. I guess I got complacent with finding a suitable LCD cover replacement for my D800 shortly after it was released.
Anyway, I thought I'd update this thread for the archives. My D800 came back yesterday and it works flawlessly. For a total of 304.00 (not including shipping), they did the following:
Replaced Display panel (that yellow tint/cast is gone--it matches closely to my D3s)
Replaced camera back
Replaced bayonet mount
adjusted body flange back
adjusted mirror angle
adjusted auto focus operation
Checked image test
Cleaned image sensor
Firmware upgrade (was not aware there was another firmware upgrade after previous one that fixed the freezing)
General check and clean.
That's less than what Leica charged me to fix a redline on a sensor in the M8. Which they screwed up and I had to have repaired again when they sent it back. Nicely done.

Got the repair estimate from Nikon Center in El Segundo... 308 dollars to replace the back panel and LCD screen. My buddy, his wife, and I were all in shock at the low estimate repair cost, but we'll take it.
WOW, that's not bad at all. Hopefully it's only the LCD that's busted.
