Send it in. I'm sure Nikon will tell you what other components need to be replaced. Too bad this happen to you....
Do you have insurance? I insured my camera (D800E) with my home owners insurance (Allstate) and I insured it for everything, including drops etc. (things that can be done done by me)
For the $3200 I paid around $40 a year. Something to think about.....
I have coverage through Allstate if my gear is stolen, they have coverage if its dropped?? I asked an ALLSTATE agent and he said they didnt offer that........wth

He told me over the phone. He wanted to meet to tell me in person but I remained cool for the most part when he explained it to me over the phone. He's a good family man trying to start his photography business with his wife and and they offered to give me a blank check for the full replacement cost. But knowing that he is a hard working man trying to provide for his wife and two little girls with a day job, I could not take the check. We're hoping that my insurance will cover it or that the repair cost is minimal -- whichever is cheaper. But in the end, it's just a camera....Show more →

Sorry to see this, I would have liked to see your face when your friend told you what happened.

I covered most of my camera gear with State Farm with a personal effects policy which is $ 53/yr for a $ 5500 replacement cost. It definitely covers droppage as well as everything else and there is no deductible.

My D800 was dropped and met a blunt object on the ground. LCD screen is cracked as well as the back panel bent in. I know these two will have to be replaced by Nikon USA repair. Any idea what other components may need to be replaced? The camera won't turn on.
What you needed was one of those Pelican water and shock proof cases. Honestly you are a LOT nicer than I am. I don't even allow my wife let alone a friend to touch my equipment. Just the way it is. I suspect a complete back panel/LCD assembly and power switch assembly will be in order if not a circuit board or two. I'm guessing you'll have learned a lesson from this one. Next time someone asks to use it say "thanks but sorry I don't roll that way".
Your friend might want to consider making a claim with his insurance carrier. His homeowner's or renter's policy may provide liability coverage for damage caused by his negligence.

I applaud your kind heart. Keep in mind that if it's covered on straight homeowner's insurance and not a personal articles policy then it could come back to bite you later in the form of higher homeowner's insurance costs, etc.. How much is your deductible? Mine is so high that it wouldn't really be worth it to make a claim on such a repair.
I just dropped and broke my D7000 and possibly my 24-70. Homeowners Insurance wont cover stupidity. thats what i was told by my buddy the Allstate agent

Got the repair estimate from Nikon Center in El Segundo... 308 dollars to replace the back panel and LCD screen. My buddy, his wife, and I were all in shock at the low estimate repair cost, but we'll take it.
Oh man, that looks awful! I'm so sorry.
I drooped my D90 about year ago. It is now long gone. My D600 ALWAYS has a strap on it. If it isn't around my neck, my wife quickly points it out!!!!
Sorry man....
