The M will be available early 2013, which in Leica language means at least 6 months later. The M-E at the end of September, but since it's basically an M9 (old) that is not surprising.
Also I would expect the M9 and M9-P to remain in production. There was no mention about them being discontinued.

So now Leica finally has a live view camera. I like that a digital M now can be used with any focal length, at any focus distance (think close up adapters), thanks to the EVF.
But I don't think I can see myself spending whatever they are asking for this camera to gain access to a rangefinder focus mechanism, not when other full frame cameras are bound to spawn off the Sony RX1 at 1/3 or less.
Still, this is the first time a digital M body has appealed to me, thanks to live view et al.
If they priced the M at $4,000 I'd buy one now though. ...Show more →

M-E 5450$
M9 6000$
M9-P 6500$
M 6950$
Looks good!
I can understand the M9P staying in production (nicer looks, saphire screen), but why keep the M9 in production if the M-E is the same? Only the color?

And the frame lever
I suspect the build to be different, cheaper. Anyhow, Leica always keeps older model available for a while. I would expect both M9 versions to remain at least until the M starts shipping.
The new M. To be followed by the newer M. Replaced by the newest M. Not to mention the newer newest M, and then the most newest M, soon followed by the even more most newest M.
I'm mean really, what exactly is the difference between entering marketing and getting a frontal lobotomy? I suppose you drink more and hang around in strip clubs if you get into marketing?
Ken
Exactly. I mean, brands like "Submariner" or "911" never really caught on and caused massive confusion. How could you possible distinguish a 1969 Porsche 911 from the 2012 year's iteration? Luckily for marketing people there are a few bright heads on the Internet from whom they can seek advice.

I just downloaded the brochure, they only show the MM, ME and M in there.
I sure gonna mis that frame lever. Really easy way to show how other lenses would react.
Am I sick if I suggest that the new M hass a lot in common with the newly-announced Nikon D600? Same Sony-sourced 24Mp FF sensor, video, LiveView, blah blah blah... The major difference will be the rangefinder, Vs autofocus, but that does not affect iamge quality. The major differentiator in IQ terms will be the lenses, and also the on-board electronics. Oh, and another trivial difference, the price... Really, there must be something wrong with me...

Were do u read its a sony based sensor?
And indeed, the main difference between a rangefinder and a SLR or mirrorless camera is the rangefinder

If that was the Sony sensor, I'd be fine with that. But it's some weird Belgium made thing.
I like their beer, but that sensor can be a hit or miss...
Other than that all good, pretty cheap comparing to some rumors...
EVF is cheap, could be a more sophisticated one. At least the LCD is better...
There is no other known FF C-MOS sensor of 24Mp. Hence the very probable Sony source. And yes, I stand by the fact that a difference in focusing method, while substantial, does not affect IQ, thus allowing a apples-to-apples comparison. That could be good for Leica, if the pictures demonstrate true superiority, or not so good, if the difference shows the emperor to have not much on by way of clothing... a la Leica X2...

Leica stated that the sensor was developed in cooperation with CMOSIS. Not a Sony sensor. http://www.cmosis.com/
