M-E for $5450...so basically the M9 replacement. Camera looks almost identical. I kinda like the color of it. Looks very stealthy and almost like a camouflage military green.
With that, Im sure M9 prices will slide into the $3500 range, and M8's $1000-1500

So now Leica finally has a live view camera. I like that a digital M now can be used with any focal length, at any focus distance (think close up adapters), thanks to the EVF.
But I don't think I can see myself spending whatever they are asking for this camera to gain access to a rangefinder focus mechanism, not when other full frame cameras are bound to spawn off the Sony RX1 at 1/3 or less.
Still, this is the first time a digital M body has appealed to me, thanks to live view et al.
If they priced the M at $4,000 I'd buy one now though. ...Show more →
It is still the only FF mirrorless with interchangeable lenses. Tomorrow may be another story with Hasselblad, but the price might not be to your liking. Leica will look cheap in comparison.
Good price point for the M10, will make most of us existing M9 user want to consider upgrading... weather sealing, high ISO, GPS, visoflex, R lenses, EVF, macro hurrah!!
Also good that the ME pricing is not that low, that helps to keep the used M9 pricing from tanking

For now. It seems very likely we'll see others enter this space if not this year, by next.
Whether they'll bring forth cameras that can do a good job with our M lenses or not is another matter. Unless Ricoh surprises and does something nice for M lens users, soon, it may be prudent to assume Leica will be the only game in town.
If so, I'll probably look for a full frame compact system camera maker and accept their vendor lock in for lenses... only there isn't one yet (Leica aside).
Or wait for the new M to drive lower new or used when it is superseded by another Leica. I have to admit, with live view and an EVF I'd be a happy camper with the M all price consideration aside.

May I disagree with you ?. The only FF mirrorless with interchangeable lenses, right now, is the Sony VG-900 videocam. A Leica M, being RF, cannot be mirrorless.

Hm, yes, there are some thins inside that rangefinder, might call them mirrors
Why is it likely that we'll see other FF's with interchangeable lenses? It's a huge technical issue that lay ahead. Sony, which is basically the only actor with resources and where such a system would fit strategically, has a mount that will make every full frame lens as huge as SLR lens. And the Nex 7 issues with rf lenses is famous, and that's a much smaller sensor.
And a few years after the successful NEX system the lens line-up is still a limiting factor. Ok, for alt lenses that's a non-issue, but it's not much economy in building a system and not sell any lenses.
I'm afraid that it will take a few years before we see such a camera. In the meantime the M will be the only option.
The new M. To be followed by the newer M. Replaced by the newest M. Not to mention the newer newest M, and then the most newest M, soon followed by the even more most newest M.
I'm mean really, what exactly is the difference between entering marketing and getting a frontal lobotomy? I suppose you drink more and hang around in strip clubs if you get into marketing?
Ok, here's a quick summary of the main differences, for those not wanting to dig through the many specs listed:

In addition the ME has no frameline selector and no USB port(vs M9/P).

I don't think thats gonna happen with the M9 and M8.
M9's can be found now for 3750 euro, M9P for 4500 and the M-E costs new 4800.
So 1000 euro less than a new camera for the M9 with gives u the same camera with nicer colors (black and grey).
The M9P has the nicer colors (silver chrome and black paint) and saphirre screen over the M-E, for less money.
So I won't think they gonna drop that fast. 1000 euro is quite a big gap all ready.
M8's can be found for 1500 euro (sold mine two months ago for that amount), they don't compete with the M9 because the prices are really a lot lower. So why would it drop. Its not replaced.
