You can use a R-> M adapter for M lens, and a F->M adapter for the nikkor, assuming you are talking about the SLR and not the S-mount. You will be using the EVF for manual focusing.

Friends, I need your help. As I told you I was planning to buy a new ME or a used M9 until the typ 240 becomes widely available by mid next year. Now a local shop has offered me a new M9 grey for 5700$. What should I do? The M9 will be discontinued in 10 days. Is it wise to buy it now?

If your interest isn't in the M, I think you should go for it, Edward. Prices probably aren't going to fall much more than that and, since it shares so much in common with the ME, at least you'll know screen/shutter/sensor/processors will be available for some time into the future.

Wait, we are talking grey as in color not grey as in of questionable import, right?

Hi Edward,

As mentioned above, if you have no interest in the M, then maybe a used M9 is a better option. Second prices for mint condition M9's are amazing. It is probably a better option than the M-E, if you can buy it for around $4,500 or less.

The M will be an amazing camera, but technically still unknown, how it will perform as a production model.

Good Luck!
Charles

Thank you Brad and Charles! I meant steel grey color. To be honest between used M9 at 4500$ and new at 5700$ I would rather buy new. Of course my main interest is the M but it's a long wait.

I honestly feel if you are not a diehard RF guy, M9 is gonna disappoint you.
Why not to wait a few more months and get the real deal - the new M?

That is not impossible. I don't know because I never tried it. But I have shot film RF for a year and I loved the experience. By the way, don't expect to see the M anytime soon. If you're lucky you can get one by September next year judging from the M9 and M9-P delivery delays.

So the expected availability that B&H shows at the end of January for the M is definitely not accurate?

I'm sure it is, for the first piece or two

In fact, I hope to be wrong this time, but if I remember correctly many buyers had to wait about 6 months to get their cameras and that after the product was released.

The ONLY AF system worth having in the future will use the sensor itself. The sooner Leica moves to that inevitability, the better. It's time to drop the rangefinder focusing altogether. I was hoping the M10 would make this bold move but it seems to be trying to keep both camps happy, which is always a compromise. The purists can keep shooting with their M6s I hope the rest can see that the strength in the Leica system is the LENSES, not the method of focusing, and Leica is in a unique position to produce a high-resolution mirrorless full frame camera with lenses to match.

Looking forward to seeing results from this sensor. I hope there's a good reason Leica chose this rather unusual sensor supplier!

Edward, not sure if you have made up your mind, but the steel grey color M9 does not age as well as a black paint of silver chrome, but I think the final color choice is personal. I'm quite sure there will be existing new old stock M9s available concurrent with the new M-E, maybe its best to wait a few weeks and try both to compare? I do like the frame selector on the M8/9 as I can gauge which lenses to use without having to remove the current lens on the body. Good luck!

The new M is still in prototype stage, I doubt it will be available in January knowing Leica's history but you never know.. best to pre-order one right now if anyone is interested.

----
I cannot understand some who are asking Leica to drop the rangefinder camera. Quoting a recent interview, 55,000 Leica M9s were sold? No market? Well not definitely Canon or Nikon volumes but if you don't like the rangefinder, go shoot something else, why deprive the others who enjoy shooting a rangefinder to have a digital M. Why don't you lobby Phase One or Nikon or other to create the camera that you want, since you seem to think there is a market for an alternative camera with AF to use your M mount lenses?

Agreed. Shooting a Leica M is about the rangefinder. We can talk about how great the lens quality is, but, at the end of the day, the IQ from these expensive lenses is lost on most who don't spend their days discussing it in forums, and the IQ from other systems is very good these days, too. Heck, if I do buy an M digital, I'll likely just use ZM lenses, anyways.

Without the rangefinder, there's not that much that is compelling to me about Leica M, outside of maybe the size of the lenses.

I think you should give the M9 a try soon

Let me quess, U drive a porche 911 pickup truck? The purists can use an old 911. Because, lets face it, the best thing about a porsche 911 is the navigation system.

Well, all of that being said, spending $5K minimum (used M9 and ZM 50/2) isn't worth shooting a FF digital rangefinder for me right now. I like shooting rangefinders from time to time, but it isn't the be all, end all for me. I can always bust out my old film rangefinders and a few rolls of film if I want the experience. Granted, used M9s may fall more once the M starts shipping, so we'll see, but $5K is enough for a decent little photo trip.

I have no problem with Leica making rangefinder cameras but IMHO the rangefinder is as much an anachronsim as the SLR mirror box is. The advantages of the EVF are substantial and should be the primary focus of future cameras, not an add-on.

Thank you Joe! I think I will wait a couple of weeks. New M9s might depreciate even more when the ME becomes available. Or get a used M9 for about 4K.
