I find it KIND of hilarious that Leica, maybe the most classical company of them all still in the camera business (Zeiss is older and more blue-blood, but only makes lenses in reality now) now uses sensor technology almost two full generations newer that the top-of-the line Canon 1Dx... :-)

How is that hilarious? If you want to become the oldest camera manufacturer alive, you need to keep at the forefront of technology. Nothing paradoxical about it. Ford's still in business and every now and then they come up with something the rest haven't.
Not that have the slightest clue how you came to the conclusion that they have a sensor 2 gen ahead of 1Dx, but never mind.

Any news on the shutter on either the ME or M? I wonder if it's any quieter than the M9.

How do you figure it is two generations better?

Well, the previous "top-of-the-line" camera, the M9, was mostly 2002-technology. It's basically the same as the Olympus E-1 in electronic structure, and the mechanics are from the early 50's.
Saying that Leica has EVER been at the forefront of anything except market manipulation and customer hypnosis is very close to an outright lie.

The sensor fab comparison is from just comparing the metal and fabrication resolution for an FF sensor. 300mm wafer 110nm processes for FF is stuff Canon sensor IP developers can only dream about.

Funny, but obviously not correct. And you did miss a glaring example: optical design, and specifically aspherical lens design.

Everything but the ceramic IC package is made in Europe.

That's pretty exciting...a unique, new FF 35MM sensor!

What can one say except well done Leica? Once it is available, I'll be getting rid of all my DSLRs and other camera systems as well as all non-M lenses. This is really the camera I've been waiting for The price level was a pleasant surprise as well.

A little thing like first range finder and small format film camera comes to mind, not to mention the lens technology that is arguably the best in the world. Leica have been stumbling into the digital era, no doubt, but that does not eradicate their previous achievements.

Being almost neighbours drop me a pm if you're selling stuff. Unless your dslr stuff is canon (as I have nikon).

Well we're all different, that's for sure. I can say that I'm underwhelmed (again) and my 11 Leica lenses will continue on my three Leica film bodies and NEX-7. The Leica glass is great and it's just as well the bodies don't matter too much. Someone on the very first page of this thread said that Leica should stop embarrassing themselves and only make lenses like Zeiss and I'm beginning to think that may be a valid point of view.

So, you think Leica should add more field curvature, smudgy corners and gnarly boke? That is surely an opinion, but not one I share. Zeiss makes great lenses, and I love mine (I have about 10), but none of them can touch the 21SE, 28 Cron, 50 Lux ASPH and 90 Cron ASPH, IMO.

Just out of curiosity, what is it u miss? As far as I can see they put all the gadgets in the M body people were shouting about, and also kept a pure rangefinder next to it in production.

What more is there to ask?

Name one optical design first for Leica?

Not sure about design, but were they not first who used aspherical glass in lens?

Believe that might be Canon:

http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/tech/room/hikyu.html

"The FD55mm f/1.2 AL was marketed in 1971 as the first interchangeable lens for 35mm SLR camera in the world, employing an aspherical lens element."

With all due respect, this is hilarious! Leica have made the first digital FF RF in history, and now, they make the first FF mirrorless body in history complete with LV, focus peaking, EVF, and an optical rangefinder on the top of that. This is something even crazy Sony didn't dare to do.

Sorry, Edward, I cannot see how they make "now" the first FF mirrorless. If the M is such a design, then the M9 was the same, as far as FF mirrorless go, and should be recognized as the first one.

Agreed.

I've done my share of Leica bashing over the years but this new M is sweet. A FF mirrorless digital camera without the focus and lens limitations of a typical rangefinder. Its a revolutionary achievement. Bravo Leica.
