I'm curious how they tuned the micro lenses as well and if there is an AA filter or not.
The microlenses are tuned. Otherwise they would run into problems with some of their M lenses.
But it is made differently than with Kodaks shifted microlenses.
Now, I wonder if Leica will update the M9's firmware to support tethering? This would be more than helpful.
I know that grip "supports" transfers over USB but come on...We have USB in the M8/M9 already. I would love to shoot headshots and whatnot with my M9 tethered to capture one natively. I used to have a work around with image capture and a hot folder but mountain lion or something nipped it in the bud.
..who else realised that now you can use "M" with adapter and ANY lens made for FF?
In fact Leica made first FF mirrorless. With EVF and apparently focus peaking too.
Just wish this little holy grail wasnt so damn expensive..
I just wonder is this combo going to be better than say a 5D/D800 since they share the common theme of CMOS? I understand that is a small piece to the puzzle but it is bigger than others.
I understand different strokes but just a question. I've never used EVF and only used LiveView on my canon's, nex and iphone. That is goofy at times. Something about seeing through a finder, M9, or the lens, SLR, is a bit different to me. Maybe the EVF is great?
Not because the lenses are incredibly amazing or because I think it can take better photos than a properly tuned D800E.
I want one for the same reason I enjoy fine watches, it just looks very well made and it's full frame.
Just hard to justify spending $10k for a new system. At least when I drop $10k in watches, I know the value usually goes up with the pieces I tend to buy.

Let us know how it is. If it turns out to be reliable and glitch free, I will buy one! It does look pretty sweet but I'm not so sure I would want to be the first soldier on the battlefield with this one. Lot's of new stuff for Leica to screw up I'm afraid.
Yes, it is a poor decision for a user standpoint, to mimic the "film-loading" method of the "analogue" M cameras. The M8 could have been a clean break with the plate of yore, but instead Leica removed "the notch" at the viewfinder housing and kept the bottom plate. My opinion is that for reasons of commonality, the M9 then became captive to the accessory grip designed for the M8.
You sit and fiddle in cold, or wet weather, with a plate in your left hand, a camera in your right hand, the battery...in...your third hand.
By "an accessory that gives people the option", how do you mean? shaunmlavery wrote:
Oh come on, it isn't "that bad" is it? Just have an accessory that gives people the option?

Yep, literally a few thousands of them but they require an adapter and preferably the optional EVF ...

Actually, I am now really interested in this new M, not because of the EVF and live view but for the other much needed improvements to the existing M9.
The weather sealing is a big plus for me and I'm sure for others too. I had to send my M9 back to Leica NJ because the shutter and ON-OFF switch got stuck. I wasn't shooting in the rain but sweat and probably some liquid got into the crevices over time and the entire thing got stuck and rendered the camera useless.
The new Leica Maestro processor would also be a big plus for better response and hopefully better buffer rates. I've had issues with the M8/M9 software freezing randomly. Heck, even my brand new M Monochrom freezed the first week I got the camera which is really frustrating. Another big plus is the pricing. I think we were all expecting a price point closer to USD 10,000 and if the US$6995 is true, its looks like a bargain (relatively speaking) and compelling for most current digital M user to consider adding one or upgrading.
