p.1 #11DX Ethernet direct to laptop.
I was able to get my 1DX connected to my desktop by plugging the Ethernet cable into my switch, works fine, no problems at all. So I was trying to get it connected to my laptop with just the Ethernet cable from camera to laptop, no switch involved, no go. So I made up a crossover cable and it worked just fine. Did I miss something in the manual? I would have thought that the port on the camera would have been auto sensing. Not every laptop has an auto sensing port and not everyone carries a crossover cable with them.

My answer may not apply at all to the 1D X however, after reading a thread it was suggested that I may enjoy live view, focusing with the AF as well as manual for crisp sharp exposures. I tethered my 5D MkIII to my laptop with the included cable with the USB to plug into the laptop. When completed with the cable provided and using the Canon Utilities software disc doing photo's with my indoor set-up it worked perfectly. Is the Ethernet cable all that is provided with your 1D X for tethering to a computer? I didn't even check to see if one was included with the 5D MkIII but I don't remember offhand seeing one looking thru the contents of the shipping box.

Yes, I did some web searching and found that the 1D X using the ethernet can speed up data transmission. Do you still use the Canon Utilities program for this of some other software? I still have a little pause when I see the 1D X as I cancelled my pre-order since picking up the 5D MkIII before the 1D X's were released here. Looks to be a fine camera and I've seen some really beautiful exposures from those with it....maybe someday for me.

I'm guessing neither the 1DX nor your computer has auto MDIX support, which is not uncommon unfortunately.

When you connect two dissimilar devices, such as a switch to PC or a router to PC, you need to use a straight Ethernet cable. When you connect two similar devices (eg: router to router), you need to use crossover cable. Seems like the 1DX "sees" the laptop as a similar device.

+1

Generally, Gbit ports (devices/controllers) automatically sense what they are plugged into: switch or straight to another device, and will convert the pin-outs and data transmission accordingly. But not all devices support auto MDIX, as it's not a required.
