Now I have gone through all my RX1 photos with white/bright edges. Some of them do have a cast, but it's very minor (especially compared to mortyb's), so I have decided to keep my RX1. To say it's my dream camera is to exaggerate (since there are things that could be improved), but it's the closest so far.

mortyb, the strange corner on my bench shot is caused by unevenness in the snow casting a shadow.

Great news! If this is your dream camera, of course you should keep it. Looking forward to the reults!

Andrew, this is rock solid. I see a potential candidate to the Nobel Prize in Economical Sciences.

I apologize.

So - mine is going back. But - this is a fantastic camera, so hopefully I will get another in a while. Maybe from my friends in US, the savings are massive. I'll follow the RX1 Image Thread, results are awesome.

Okay, although I am reluctant in case I find something I don't like, if anyone wants a shot of a white ceiling or an off white wall, let me know what settings you want it shot at and I will do it tmorrow. No snow, sorry

Here is an image showing the decentering of my RX1 lens. I hope it won't turn up in full size, but compare the upper left corner and the left border (but not the brown text which has something that looks like CA in the print) with the right border and lower right corner...

It's kinda funny listening to people whine about cost of camera in Europe.

I purchased my vehicle in Germany for around 75k USD and had it shipped to the United States. The exact same car built in the exact same factory costs 110k euro.

Its not the manufactures. It's all the taxes that go along with it.

Thanks!
Honestly, it's so tiring to see the same comments, over and over again,
every new camera, "so expensive in Norway", "so much in Germany".
Hopefully the new French model of "75% tax for rich" will be the solution...
I would love to discuss the camera instead of anything else.

BTW the difference between different samples here is quite striking.
Seems like quality control

Could the uneven color seen by Mortyb also be a function of the lens shading compensation feature? I did a quick test against a white wall, and I could see differences on-off and raw vs. jpeg, but I need to go now and cannot draw any conclusions...

I've boxed the camera. But I know for the shots posted, of the three auto correction options, only the distortion was set to off, the other two to auto. I didn't touch them, this is how they were from the start. It would be interesting if someone could do some quick tests.

I've noticed that no one has yet commented on my decentered lens. Am I too picky?

I emailed Zeiss and they told me that you can't expect corner-to-corner sharpness, wide open at this short distance. I agree, but this was only to confirm what I've seen in other images, taken at larger distances. However, the problem seems to go away when approaching infinity. Also, since the right hand border is tack sharp from top to bottom, it's clearly possible for the lens to be sharp from corner to corner all around, but it isn't.

I'm really worried that the salesman is only gonna laugh at me and refuse to let me have an other copy, because then I will never feel satisfied with this camera again and I will have to sell it with great loss.

Really?!?! Did you enlage to 100%? To me, like 1/4 of the left part of the image is unsharp while the right one is very sharp.

No doubt there are differences in sharpness across the frame. If it was my camera, I would really be in doubt what to do. I don't think it's acceptable, esp. if you see it in normal shots. This camera is really expensive, and you would expect much better quality control. Are you able to just return it for a refund, no questions asked? If so, I'd go that route, and wait for another one.

Ah, I just looked at it as it was. Let me try again.

Anyway, didn't you say that every once in a while, a photo didn't write to the card? There is another reason for you.

Ah, I see it now, but... it is so easy to make a very slight error in such a test that I am not sure it is convincing. You could have been slightly non-square, and focused in such a way that only the most distant left side was unsharp. In theory. What about measuring out an exact distance and ensuring perpendicularity via trigonometry and repeating, maybe on a more distant wall or something?

Seriously, Martin - if you're in doubt, I'd do what I could to get a refund. Decentered lens on a $4000 fixed-lens camera is just not okay as far as I'm concerned.
