No they are not, not even close. Assume that $2800 is the accurate price. A Zeiss 35mm f/2 lens costs $1100. Subtract that from the price and you are left with a camera that costs $1700. Hardly Leica pricing. More like Fujifilm X Pro 1 pricing.

Given that Leica wants $8000 for a new 50mm f2.0 Summicron lens I'd say Leica has already gone far above even "Leica pricing".

Sony's simply charging the old Leica pricing. When it was certainly expensive but still affordable for most enthusiast.

New Leica pricing is basically putting their products into an ultra exclusive niche market that few if any enthusiast are going to be able to afford, and perhaps thats just what Leica wants.

Sony is just filling that void for those of us who have some money to burn but that don't travel by private jet.

I was talking about the accessories:

Leica doesn't have the expertise to put something this advanced in electronics together. I'm sure if they tried, the price would be astronomical.

Everyone is going upscale. Look at prices for Canon's latest higher end releases. The Zeiss 135 f/2 is $2K, in line with higher pricing for the 15, 35 f/1.4 and 25 f/2... I just read today that Burberry is slashing their 'entry level' luxury goods to move more upscale (and it's not going so well for them)... Maybe Sony knows something about Leica's supposedly upcoming mirrorless camera and is pricing the RX1 accordingly?

At least in the photo world, where most people shoot with a cell phone, my feeling is the camera manufacturers have no choice but to go premium, wringing out as much $$$ from a camera or lens as possible to offset the lower volumes premium products entail.

On a different line of thought - I wonder how long it will take for someone to offer a conversion service that removes the lens from the RX1 and replaces it with a Leica M mount, or other short register distance mount? The question of course will be, how will the sensor with its various toppings play with such a conversion? BTW, sorry if this has already been suggested/discussed, as I'm not inclined to read back through the last 10+ pages since I last checked in on this topic...

Let's see what they announce in a few days. In case you didn't know, the M8 and M9's electronics were outsourced to Jenoptic whereas the S2 was done in-house. I wouldn't say the S2 is technologically better than other similar cameras, but it at least indicates Leica does have capability to produce something competitive. And that was 3 years ago...

wow, the pricing on accessories is definitely ballsy:

The Cyber-shot RX1 compact, fixed lens camera will be available this November for about $2800.
The FDA-EV1K electric viewfinder and FDA-V1K optical viewfinder will each be available at launch for about $600 and $450, respectively.
The thumb grip, lens hood and jacket case will also be available at launch for about $250, $180 and $250, respectively.

I'm sorry, that's ridiculous pricing! $250 for a thumb grip? $600 for the EVF, $400 for the OVF! By the time your done, this is a $4000+ P&S! I think I will buy the Leica M10 instead!

The optical finer looks kind of dumb.

Well, it's very nice to see that the RX1 uses an almost silent leaf shutter that syncs all the way up to 1/2000. I'm surprised - and delighted - they did this.

That's an "authentic" Zeiss finder, not a newer Sony design. They are the best finders you can buy so that does explain the $$400 price.

The wedding photographer who can afford the RX1 can shoot wide open in the middle of the day and sync his lighting? Huzzah!

But seriously, that would be pretty handy if that's what I needed.

Its not dumb, its brilliant. The markup they will be making is HUGE!

There is going to be a whole segment of customer who will take all the accessories at the Sony store the guy behind the counter suggest because money is no object.

For everyone else, they will just go for a cheap Ebay knockoff for $40.

So really, doesn't matter if Sony priced it at say, $99, because those who would gladly pay $99 would just as easily pay $250, and those that won't pay $250 also wouldn't pay $99.

Let the China Ebayers have the frugal market and wring every dollar out of the wallets of those who find money no object with crazy OEM pricing.

Or you could pick up a Fuji X100 for $999 and sync up to 1/4000th lol

It's all very cool and well done but it's just missing so much. No tilt LCD and no on sensor PDAF (so I'm betting the AF is going to be rather disappointing) are the big ones for me.

Yeah, I get the logic but I think most of us around here would pay the $99-$125 for the thumbs up (I did for the X100 and it was well worth it imo) but would never pay $250. There will be cheaper options like you say though.

No tilt or touch but at least it has a tilt EVF. Also has a pop up tillable flash.
