p.10 #1 · How noisy is your 7D?

IMO, the 1DIV out performs the 7D in every aspect of performance. Last year, I sold my 7D and 1DIII to help pay for a new 1DIV. No regrets. None.

I personally prefer to check how my photos look at 50% crop. If it looks good, I'm a happy camper.

That is my 7D strategy as well. If the 100% crop looks like crap, don't look at it. See how the 50% looks. If it looks good at 50%, it will print well and downsize well for web viewing.

Those of you that shoot both cameras, am I correct that as ISO's climb and the light gets dimmer, the 1D4 should significantly out-perform the 7D? I've always wanted a 1-Series, but $3K is a lot of money for me, and I need to start talking myself out of this if this isn't a good idea.

I shoot with the 1D Mark IV and 7D regularly. Virtually everything I shoot is in servo mode with both cameras. While the 1D Mark IV has a better AF system than does the 7D, there isn't as big of a difference in my in-focus shot rate between the two cameras as you might guess. I find that, with either camera, if I'm using solid technique, properly locking in focus, and maintaining contact between the focus point and the subject, those are the factors that play the major role in whether my shots are in focus or not, and they are more important than the differences in the focus systems of the two cameras. When I've been using the 7D exclusively for the past two months with my 400 DO because of the need for mobility combined with reach, I've had numerous opportunities to shoot fast moving action (often) with very busy backgrounds, and I've routinely been getting bursts of 7 or 8 shots with virtually every shot in sharp focus.

Similarly, while I'm also sure that the image quality from the 1D Mark IV is better than that from the 7D, again, the differences are not nearly as large as one might believe from reading forum posts. Without looking at the file information, I cannot really tell which prints have come from 7D files and which came from from 1D Mark IV files.

Thus, I start out with confidence in both cameras with regard to AF and image quality, and, when I'm choosing which camera to use in which situations, the choice is made based on factors other than AF and image quality. If I need a light weight and mobile rig, I'll choose the 7D and my 400 DO. If I am in an extreme focal length-limited situation, I'll also choose the 7D with my 500 and, perhaps, a 1.4x. If the situation is not focal length-limited and if I don't need mobility and portability, I'll choose the 1D Mark IV. Again, neither of the two cameras has let me down in any way, and I have confidence that, if my technique is solid, neither will let me down in the future.

I hope so, considering the difference in street prices of two cameras that were sold at the same time for a long time. That the 1D4 "outperforms" the 7D shouldn't be considered a revelation; rather, it would be quite shocking if the opposite were true.

As a value proposition, depending on the size of one's wallet and one's requirements, the 7D may well be a better option.

I'm happy that my personal experience helps to fulfill your expectations. Really.

It's also very possible that the ELPH 310 HS may well be a better option. Better is in the eye of the camera holder...

Thanks guys. I'm probably going to have to go ahead and rent a 1D4 to see if it's worth the money to me under the conditions I'll be using it in the most.

Are you suggesting that you don't have a firm grasp of the obvious?

Can we continue discussing the real topic ?. This thread is useful for 7D owners, for people that hate it maybe this thread is not for you ?.

I sold my 7D. Not because I hated it, but because I needed something better.

I thought my comments were relevant when I posted them. I still think they are relevant, despite the noise that's been stirred up.

Do you think that comments on a 7D thread should be confined to people who currently own one? I wonder how many, or how few, people who have posted in this thread are current 7D owners? Of those who don't currently own one, how many, or how few, have ever owned one?

Ciao.

I own one, and love it for the things it's good for (as I said in a very early post on this poor, tortured thread). And use the 5d3 for the things the 7D isn't so good for.

I'm suggesting that any further correspondence in this misguided conversation should be taken up through PM, or email. For the latter, you could try sending a reply to [email protected]

If you want to find out you can check their profiles or ask them and I'm not interested in doing so. This thread is basically trying to help people that are interested in getting better at processing their 7D files. There are better cameras than 7D of course but that's not what this thread is concerned about.

Sorry that I offended your expectations on what's acceptable for contributions to an internet forum. I think it's fair to expect that content can drift away from the OP intent, and not cause unjust harm. Should I get your permission before posting any other comments on this thread, or should I check with you on all future posts?

P.S. don't worry, I won't really check with you - it wouldn't help either of us...

Good. now let's continue talking about 7D file processing.

Nice Romy, my results come out to be very close to yours as well on the one raw. Here is a really quick run though, nothing very elaborate, no masks, etc. I think I tried to hard to bring the detail out, but we are really only looking at the noise for this example, i believe.

Amazing that our RAW conversions are very similar, eventhough I used ACR and you (I presume) used DPP.
