Just few minutes ago I received delivery from Georges in Sydney of my new 24-70 L II. After just few shots at f2.8 I'm very happy. I will do MA with FoCal this evening to find out more detail of its performance, but for now I'm so happy. I was waiting for this lens a very long time
The one disappointing thing (other than price) is how even though mfd is same as old lens, magnification is nearly 30% smaller. This new design must mean the FL is much smaller than 70mm now at mfd, which might be a by product of it now being longer at longer FL, the opposite of the old lens.
You guys would be surprised on the quality and durability of these new engineered plastics versus the older materials. Lighter in weight and better durability. Win win.
It may not FEEL as high quality to the touch, but it will perform just as well if not better I am sure.
The design specs skibum5 linked to says much improved durability over the previous version, partuially to support much higher image making rate with digital.
I didn't like the feel of the new 100L either. That plastic feel but after using it hard for about 2 years, it still looks new and has taken some good knocks. I guess it is ok. :^)

I am not surprised by that. However, I am surprised that Canon do not make their supertelephoto lens barrels as well as 1D series bodies using the same plastic material.
Well, I for one am excited. The current version I has never been fantastic IQ at f2.8. Wide at the edges it's never been great either, even at f5.6 or similar.
But most of all I would prefer something which was less bulky and felt more like the 24-105 in terms of weight
I can't wait to see how it performs compared with the current lens. If it does well, I'm there!

My 24-70 vers I is super sharp at 24 mm also in the corners. Can even use it well for some closeup and macro stuff with tubes. No way that I am trading this version in for this new one.

Is it actually? I spoke to someone else who said the same and when I looked at some photos at 100% it was largely the same as mine... I guess that particular person and I had different views on "super sharp". However, I've only seen 2 copies of this lens so I'm perfectly prepared for the fact that copies vary.
Take a straight on photo of a brick wall at 5-10 feet,f4 and f2.8 at 24mm and post 100% at 22mp. I'd be honestly interesting to see..
I can clearly say that I've never been completely happy with mine (in that I know it could be better). However, I'm really picky.

Good point. If Canon feels so confident about these new plastics put it in those. It will be interesting how well it holds up after release to the public.

If you have the pro version of FoCal please share the Aperture Sharpness Test graph that you can run which shows the sharpness results at various f-stops.... that would be interesting to see.
