I am tempted by this lens, but I will be hard pressed to give up my fantastic 24-105L and spend nearly $1.5k in addition. I will wait and see how this works.

It's not listed on staff purchase yet, which is all I care about.

I know many love the lens but after several hours, hundreds of photos and 2 orders I think it sucks.

Good timing too because the 24-70 is my most used lens and I would love one that is sharper, and addresses some of the mechanical engineering issues that exist with the current one. I'm not knocking it, I'm just not discounting room for improvement.

If I decide the 24-70 II lets me ditch the 24 1.4 II and I keep the 24-70 instead I will sell my 24 1.4 II. I sort of hope this happens, but it might be too much to expect, MTF charts not withstanding, then again at $2300 it sorta should be able to pull off that miracle. (I think you are in mid or western PA and not eastern? If you were in eastern it would be interesting to see if my 24 1.4 worked well enough on your 1D4 for you to be satisfied or if it would turn into a mess too.)

Wow, the 24II is one of my favorite lenses - use it in almost all my senior shoots and a lot of basketball games. I'd like to read about your experiences, is there a thread on this?

The 24-70 is the most used lens for me too. I sell that lens here a couple of weeks ago, I have now the 24-105 f4 in the meantime.
I don't know if buying a 50 1.2 or 35 1.4 or the new 24-70 2.8. Hmm!

A Australian ebay seller has the 24-70 f/2.8 II listed:

I would like them to explain to me improved usability.

the ones for sale in Australia are in a kit with the 5d3 but are being sold separate they come in a full retail box.

picked one up this morning the dealer had another 10 available at that time. it seems to be very well built and focuses very close and fast. seems like a good upgrade so far.

Go look at a mirror, then roll your eyes.

Not sure I understand that comment.

Usability is subjective. The lock switch on my 70-300L has been a love/hate relationship for me. To each his own.

You used an emoticon in either an aloof or smug gesture denoting everyone should just know and appreciate the zoom lock as an expanded function of improved usability.

I don't like that, and told you to go do it to yourself.

Perhaps I was ignorant of the new feature (true) perhaps I don't care about it (also true). I'm not knocking the lens, in knocking the sales pitch. I'm not so sure that I've ever met anyone who didn't buy the 24-70 and said I'll wait for
Version two when they implement a zoom lock.

I'm glad you like it. I plan on buying it but not for
The zoom lock. I'll be doing it for
Improved image quality.

The emoticon wasn't my intent. It was more a take it or leave it gesture. I'll know better next time. I can't tell you how many times I put on the 70-300L and tried to zoom right away only to find the lock was engaged. I've had the 24-70v2 on order since late winter so I'd expect it soon. I certainly didn't order it for the zoom lock.

interesting they mention new design focusing system, maybe that is the one R.C. discovered popped up starting with the 70-300L, maybe they have decided to use it in marketing now after all.

It removes about 5lbs of cash from your wallet so you are now lighter, freer and more maneuverable when shooting.

All I can think of otherwise, is that maybe the manual focusing ring is smoother and wider or maybe the old one didn't have a zoom lock , yeah who knows, probably it's what I first suggested.
